True, but I've not actually bought a bottle like that since the early eighties.

A fair point - truly corked wine (a sign of an imperfect cork and/or poor storage) is actually quite unusual these days. And - love 'em or hate 'em - the plastic corks ought to virtually eliminate corked wine.

Ooh, don't get me started on corks or we'll have to take the whole thread over to enviromental and ethical!
  • i dont drink wine so i just buy the cheapest (usually value) wine from the supermarkets and use that.
Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts

5 mini bottles for a £5 from asda. I do have a couple of favourites for cooking with though, no idea what they are, I can tell by the bottle shape.... I'm tee-total can you tell?

although, maybe I do make up for it when cooking... slosh, slosh, slosh into everything!

Same here, odd that I never acquired the taste for wine as a drink, but I do like it adding a bit of body to a sauce or deglazing.

I won't spend more than £3 on a bottle (red or white) as a result, but have bought much more expensive bottles for friends/family who have an appreciation.

  • Major confession coming here. Look away now if you are of a nervous disposition.

If ever anyone in our house can't finish a glass of wine I secretly put it in a little tupperware in the freezer and use it for cooking. Can't see good wine go to waste.
I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!
  • I'm another one that keeps a bottle with all the bits and pieces of ends of bottles/ glasses in for cooking. Otherwise we tend to use /drink Chilean merlot - £2.98 a bottle in Tesco.

This might sound silly but I would like to try some of the recipes I have which include wine as an ingredient, stews etc. I want to buy wine which tastes good when included, but in true MS style I don't want to pay too much unnecessarily. Any recommendations for white and red brands/types which would work well. As a non wine drinker the whole aisle just looks way too confusing!! Thanks lots.

I use the mini bottles from Asda. The last one I used with beef in the slow cooker was a red called Campo Viejo Crianza. I used about one glass worth, and it made the stock very tasty.

The advantage of the little bottles if you aren't a wine drinker is that they have screw tops, so you can use what you need and save the rest for next time.
