  • Thank you for all the replys everyone :) I had not even thought of doing an extra spin in the washing machine that will make it more easy to get it dried. I really know nothing about drying clothes any other way then putting them in the machine :o If I put them outside even though it's cold at the mo will it dry? I think I will see the machine going as a chance to learn how to dry clothes without it thus saving money :D

I have a line and if it's sunny or windy they go outside. Otherwise on the clothes horse or radiator hangers. I only use my dryer for towels as I like them soft!

Never had a tumble dryer, and dont think I ever will, I always do an extra spin in the wm, and hang on the line whenever possible, put some out today, it was cold and frosty, but they got mainly dry, and are now on the airer, will be dry enough to put away tomorrow ( I dont iron either ;)) and they always smell better for being outside.

Hi everyone my Tumble dryer element has gone. We have 3 loads of washing washed so lots to dry and noway of doing it after a panic I went out and got string and have made a washing line. Got me thinking how many people have a tumble dryer and if you dont how do you dry your Clothes? I am thinking it might not be that bad to be without it drying clothes on my "washing line" and airers. Got to be cheaper?

I haven't used a tumble dryer for about 10 years, since my DD was a baby.

I line dry if its dry enough outside, otherwise I have 3 airers which I put the clothes on in various rooms of the house, near the radiators. I don't put the heating on for clothes drying, just for heating, and theres usually plenty of residual heat in the rads and the air inside to dry the clothes on the airers within 24 hours.

couldnt be without my dryer even in the summer have a very small garden and a doggie who likes to wee on my washing line pole:mad: so i have done away with me line and just use my dryer and clothes horse for non tumble dry stuff. I have hayfever and asthma and have been told its not good for me to dry outdoors as I am allergic to tree pollen (April onwards) and Pollen from flower and grass. Plus it makes my garden look untidy with washing out! I would rather save money elsewhere. Could you get on freecycle ask if anyone has a dryer they could give you to tide you over until you can get a spare part for your?

Really? I love seeing washing hanging out. I don't like it when it's not hung properly though and everything looks like dishrags.

I have a family of 5, 2 with medical problems. I have a lot of washing but I very rarely use my dryer (which is in the garage and a pain to get to). In the past year it's been used about 4 times and that's only because I put my husband out to the garage as I don't like going in there (always scared there's a mouse in the dryer or something  )

We hang outside in the summer, and in the winter we hang indoors and use a dehumidifier on laundry mode... dries a full load overnight no probs and costs less to run than a T/D.

yer I have a postage stamp size garden so a line looks awful outside my kitchen window and like I said the dog uses it for target practice.

Yep. Above freezing and breezy is much better than above freezing and calm but they should dry. Just remember to bring it in before all your lovely laundry gets covered in dew.

Lovely clean washing blowing in the breeze looks untidy? It just looks like home to me.
  • We have a Bosch condenser drier and it's hardly ever off.

No doubt it contributes greatly to our electricity bill but we simply don't have the time to hang washing out and then collect it later when it's dry.
  • We've never had a drier - environmental disaster IMHO :) We use the line in summer and a creel hanging from the kitchen ceiling in summer.

I'll add this to the existing thread on clothes drying later, to keep ideas together.
