My tumble dryer is only used in an emergency. In bad weather I use my clothes horse or hang stuff from the curtain rails

My tumbledrier packed up a few weeks ago and my new one is being delivered today. Oh I can't wait!
There are 5 adults and I am fed up of seeing clothes draped over every radiator/door airer.
As for the bedding - two doubles a single and a superking every week.
I hate the constant mess! Wouldn't be without my tumbledrier although its mainly used in the winter.

I've hardly used my drier this past year.
I try to line dry everything but use airers if I can't.

I washed the sofa throws last week & decided to use my dryer to get them out of the way quickly only to find the dryer was broken.
£65 to mend it:eek: so it's gone to the scrap yard. It will not be replaced.

I use my drier when I cant line dry in the winter, we so rarely have the heating on so can't drape over radiators. Stuff that can't be tumbled goes over the back of chairs or on the airer in front of the fire embers before I go to bed.

I wouldn't be without mine and as we have solar panels I can justify the use of it by only using it during the day when we're generating free electricity.

I line dry except when its too wet/icy outside, got rid of my tumble dryer about a month ago had it for years but truly only used it once or twice each winter for towels so now its gone and I haven't missed it at all, its icy this morning so I've just hung DH shirts on hangers in the bathroom , pants and socks in the airing cupboard , towels and trousers on an airer in the spare bedroom with the window open and big bath towel over the banister.. it'll all be dry by tonight.

I love my tumble drier and wouldn't be without it at this time of year. When i was working I'd be leaving home in the dark and returning in the dark during the winter months so drying outside just didn't happen, except at weekends ( and you'd never believe how few dry weekends there were!) Now I'm retired I do try to dry clothes outside, but usually still end up using the drier to finish things off. Some things do get draped over the airers, but I don't like damp washing spread everywhere as it seems to make the whole house feel damp.

  • I had my first tumble drier 5 years when we moved into a house that space for one. I had if off freecycle and it served me well for 3 years before packing up, then in only required a new belt and lasted another 12 months. I gave it away on freecycle as spares and t he same day was offered a new one which is still (touch wood) going strong) I try not to use it but get very lazy, however as it is in the garage, which is seperate from the house, it means a trek across the garden so things often get left in there as I forget about them lol

Of course it is cheaper without tumble dryer!! Any idea how much each load cost??

HOWEVER, families who do washing machine load a day and no utility room/air dryer room and live where I do (area with highest rain fall in the country) and/or both parents work so cannot watch out for the weather it is without a question life saver and worth every penny.

I am not in this situation and I haven't got one, though sometimes when guests come to stay and I have 2 loads of sheets to wash and dry in one day I wish I had one. Just for occasional use. Unfortunately I have no space for it.

I dry our washing over our Aga rails over night and outside in the summer if the weather is decent at the weekend (rarely:-))

    Hi skintmum,

I've never had a tumble dryer and never wanted one. We dry washing outside in summer and inside on a clothes horse near radiators in winter.

As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to a recent one which has lots of advice and tips on drying washing indoors.
