  • Hi everyone my Tumble dryer element has gone. We have 3 loads of washing washed so lots to dry and noway of doing it after a panic I went out and got string and have made a washing line. Got me thinking how many people have a tumble dryer and if you dont how do you dry your Clothes? I am thinking it might not be that bad to be without it drying clothes on my "washing line" and airers. Got to be cheaper?

We have recently given ours away to our daughter as we never used it.

I prefer line drying but in this weather they get an extra spin and go straight on coat hangers or on a clothes horse in the spare bedroom.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

couldnt be without my dryer even in the summer have a very small garden and a doggie who likes to wee on my washing line pole:mad: so i have done away with me line and just use my dryer and clothes horse for non tumble dry stuff. I have hayfever and asthma and have been told its not good for me to dry outdoors as I am allergic to tree pollen (April onwards) and Pollen from flower and grass. Plus it makes my garden look untidy with washing out! I would rather save money elsewhere. Could you get on freecycle ask if anyone has a dryer they could give you to tide you over until you can get a spare part for your?
  • My dryer's been used 1/2 dozen times in the last year - only when the weather's been terrible & I've had loads of washing to do at the same time.

I try to space it out so there's time for one load to dry on the airers before having to do the next one.

I got a fab airer from L*dl a few weeks ago for £8 (very similar to one in Ar*gos which was £42!) which has 8 flat wires in the middle and 2 folding out "wings" which have about 10 wires on (these are slightly narrower but find for tea towels, vests etc). It's working a treat.

Work shirts & trousers are put on hangers straight from the machine and I hang these on radiator airers on the backs of doors.

Good weather it goes out on the rope, bad weather it gets hung on radiators, over doors, on clothes horse. Anywhere that it will dry

  • Mine gets an extra spin, onto the line if it's dry enough, or onto the clothes horse by the radiator next to the back door, then into the airing cupboard next day to finish off. I do have a dryer, but it's a mini one & I have to stick the hose out of the back door. So as long as I can keep on top of the laundry and just do one load a day, I don't need to use it. Now the heating's coming on I don't need to, but when it was too wet to dry outside but the heating wasn't on yet, I was having to put the stuff through the dryer at the weekend to get the school & work clothes done.

i line dry wherever possible, today the towels were half dry so tumble dried to finish them off

I dry the rest of the clothes over two airers in the kitchen, I have had a tumble drier for 16 years wouldnt like to be without it even though I hardly ever use it

I do loads of washing but the airers are dry within 24 hours ready for the next load, am thinking of getting a dehumidifier to help with drying the laundry

I do have a tumble dryer which I use primarily in the winter i.e now when the clothes will not get dry on the line. Normally, I would only ever line dry but in winter you need a helping hand.

I do a mixture really of clothes horses (I have two metal corcertina type ones) which I use to dry things like towels and sheets on. Anything that can go in the tumble dryer and dry quickly does. Things such as bras and knickers dry naturally as the elastic tends to go 'twangy' and brittle using a dryer. Jeans also dry naturally on the clothes horse and has a quick finish off in the dryer. I fluff my towels up using the dryer as well.

Doing it this way reduces my electric consumption down on the dryer as all I can think about when it is on is "how much is this costing me" and the thought of how fast the electric meter is whizzing round!

Forgot to add that I do not put anything directly onto my radiators at all.

Nothing beats line dried clothes where possible, I love to see my washing blowing outside,(weather permitting) if it's raining or dull it goes on an airer overnight in a spare room. I do on odd occasions use my dryer but not if I can help it, even on a cold and frosty day it goes out.
Treat other's how you like to be treated.
