I know this thread is named suggestions for drying indoors but it was the nearest I could find.

    My question is...

We have glorious sun today and looks set to continue all day according to the forecast. The temperature is still only just 2 degrees though.

Would my washing dry in such cold temperatures?

As long as the ground isn't wet the clothes should get a bit dryer. I usually hang clothes out if it's sunny and cold, and finish them off in the dryer for 20 minutes (10 minutes heat and 10 minutes cool down, but I usually take them out before the cool down has finished). If you haven't got a dryer you could just finish them off on the radiators.
  • I bought an old-fashioned (Victorian style) airer from amazon about a year ago. It is made out of wooden slats, about six feet long. You can get a load of washing on it. Even towels and duvet covers will dry on it, but in the cold weather it helps if you have the heating on. As hot air rises, I have positioned the airer in our stair well, so it is out of the way, but can be pulled down so you can access it from the landing. I hand socks on one of those little airers with pegs on, and hang it from the big airer, and I put shirts on hangers and hang them off it too. Some people use airers near there wood burners like in the old days, again the heat is rising, obviously you would need to be careful nothing could catch fire. I would recommend buying a substantial one as big as you can fit in your space. I have used our tumble drier about twice in the last year.

I bought one of the JML Dri buddies at Argos yesterday and am about to use it! It was effectively free as I found an old argos giftcard from my Birthday which I had totally forgotten about:j Will have to see how it dries the stuff now!

What did you think of the Dri Buddy? Is it worth getting one?

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on how to dry washing indoors when the weather outside is wet, without putting the heating on or using the tumbledryer. I normally just end up putting the tumbledryer on. I have an airing cupboard with a big tank...but use it to store towels!

    Any tips would be appreciated!

    Thanks :D

I wouldn't try to dry wet washing in an airtight cupboard myself. That could lead to mould in it and all sorts of other nasties.

I'd suggest you hang everything up on an airer in the kitchen with the door to the rest of the property firmly shut and all kitchen-windows wide open. The laundry I did on Sunday has dried in less than 24 hours this way. Anything that can be put on clothes-hangers, rather than laid on the airer has dried quite quickly and without too much creasing.

My tumble blew up before Christmas and I don't want to buy another as I have neither the money or the space and the saving on my electric is noticeable (dd 15 once put her fav knicks in for almost a bloomin hour !).
I have managed with two airers which are easily popped in and out with our weather and have taken too putting shirts etc straight onto hangers and hang over the curtain poles, might not look great but it works and the house smells lovely.
I try to keep on top of the washing now and with 6 of us we've managed ok :)

I put larger items like bedding, towels and hard to dry items like Jeans on the banister and just leave them till almost dry then pop in the tumble dryer for 10 mins- works perfectly, I also have a clothes airer that I use to stand in the kitchen. I use the dryer as little as possible because I am mean with using my electricity unnecessarily.

Lakeland do an electric clothes airer which costs about 3p p hr to run (300 W)

Much cheaper than purchasing/ running a tumble drier
