Have you thought of a payg simcard - O2 do a ''your country'' tarriff where if you topup by £10 a month you get 50 free international ,(EITHER landline or mobile), to many countries including USA. If you top up by £15, 100 mins or £30, 200 mins.

Ateratively I am with Talk Talk with the Carphone warehouse for my landline which for £20.49 monthly gives me broardband and unlimited calls to UK landlines,(01 +02 prefixes), and unlimited calls to landlines to my relatives in Australia, New Zealand and USA.

    Hope this is of help.

There aren't any cheap roaming possibilities, so get a US network SIM. Arrange call forwarding to it if necessary via maybe a VoIP provider

Some of the roaming SIM providers have dropped hints of dual-ID SIMs with a US network on there too, coming soon but I don't think it's actually happened yet

Take a laptop and use the free wifi available at most hotels instead.

We are going on a family holiday to California in a few weeks. Can anyone tell me the cheapest way of using a mobile phone whilst there. We would need at least 2 phones to keep in contact with each other and make calls in the USA. We do not intend to phone the UK using the mobile. I have read suggestions which vary from buying a cheap PAYG whilst there to buying a SIM off ebay. What would be the best option? Thanks

Either of those options are ok, or you can get SIMs in shops etc, though not always on their own

Different frequency bands are used in USA, so you'd need either an unlocked tri- or quadband phone from here, or get a cheap dualband when you get there.

Compare networks and tariffs on http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/usa.html

We use ATandT costs us about $15 for the sim PAYG with $15 credit ie free sim. Make sure your phone is unblocked and as redux says tri-band is essential. AT&T give the best coverage and there are plenty of AT&T shops arround. We carry two phones and we can communicate easily when we are doing different things.

THE SIM SHOULD BE FREE SO DONT NEED TO BUY OF EBAY
