Are you sure that if they didn't do it 'right' they would get a fine, a criminal (record?) and lose their job?

I'm still not sure what 'right' is? Why would having a 17 year old with my without ID stop me buying alcohol, when having an eight year old with me doesn't?

How much of this is people making things up? A criminal record for a civil offence?

Years ago, we weren't threatened with stories of fines and criminal records, but of a story of a Sainsbury's store that lost its licence and hence couldn't sell alcohol (I can't recall if the offending till operator lost their job).

Don't mean to be a pain - being a newbie - but it IS a CRIMINAL offence to sell alcohol to anyone who is underage, not a civil one. Shame this law has been flouted for so many years - and as a mum of two youngsters I am SOOOOO glad to see that shops are trying to be responsible in their sales of these products, just wish our local publicans were as responsible!!! I would certainly want my sons asked when the time comes (at 13 and 10 they haven't got a chance yet!)

As to the complainer - take a trip to reality! As long as so many young people abuse alcohol and make getting drunk the AIM of their socialising, then the shops, the publicans and the police DO have to be harsh about it.

Would personally LOVE to be asked for ID (lol).

this particular sales assistant does know me and lives locally to me

So you must know her as well then, out side of work. You must meet, chat etc. Thats whats regarded as knowing someone.

I can't see anything you've written that says that. Just a really scatty assumption that you've somehow figured she must be able to remember you more or less because you say so.

    Here it is again:
they know im over 18 and have served me b4

my tesco is tiny and its all local people who work there i would understand if it was a big one but it isnt, infact most of the staff life locally to me

she KNEW i was over 18 and had served me drink many times before

There's no "we're in the same class at college and see each other every day", "we met back in 19xx and have now know each other for x years", anything that would actually mean she knows you. Thats all you've written to prove she actually knows you. You've just been in before and shes served you before and thats it, she MUST know you. !!!!!!?
All it is is an assumption. Do you not know how to realise when your making an assumption?

You've got no idea how many people she must serve in a day. Tescos aren't going to put a shop in a quiet location it won't make any money. Even if shes served you 10 times that does not mean she will remember you, why do you keep assuming this?

It's so simple to understand but you still, after I don't know how long, still don't get it.

Does she know you from outside of Tesco? ie do you socialise with her.

No, then she does not know you and you can't assume she does!

I cannot believe I'm actually having to explain to someone how to work out if someone knows you or not.

    Morning Tim,
I thought I would go with the latest trend and keep this thread on another topic.
I was glad to see that a new series of Ideal has finally started (oops, now everyone will know I'm not a pensioner).
Aside from that, I was gutted that there wsn't a new episode of Reaper on E4 although I have recorded Big Bang Theory.

    What's your fav music?

Cally and Juice seem to be the Dj's of choice around here, but like I say, not really my thing (must be my age).;)

what so if my dads buyin alcohol when shopping with my sister and she doesnt have id but he does and shows it that means hes buying it for her? no

No, but if the cashier suspects your dad to be buying for your underage (or suspected underage) sister then they have a duty to refuse the sale, whether the reality of the situation is that they are right or wrong about their assumptions is entirely irrelevant, what is it really that is so hard to understand about this?

It's also a matter of discretion and common sense, in the example you're quoting, someone who is suspected of being underage has attempted to buy alcohol, been refused the sale, then someone with them has attempted to buy the same alcohol, you'd not have to be the sharpest knife in the drawer to see that the second person is probably buying for the person without ID. If in doubt refuse the sale.

There's a vast difference between the scenario shelfstacker presents and you're reply about your Dad and sister, her scenario involves 2 people, 1 trying to buy alcohol without ID and the second then buying it for her, yours involves one person buying alcohol in the presence of a minor, where the minor has made no attempt to buy the alcohol (although as I say above, if there's a suspicion, whether it be rationale or not, that the alcohol is being bought for the minor then the sale msut be refused.)

Tim it's not just that, I'm quite willing to accept that this cashier recognises the OP from having served her in the past, but that she know the OP's age as a result of this? I don't see it. "She's served me alcohol before" So not only do supermarket staff now remember every person who goes to the store, they also keep a mental note of the items that the person buys aswell. Not likely, When I worked in a supermarket it was a case of scanning things through the checkout and not paying much attention, if the product was age restricted the till would let me know. Had someone asked me what the person I served ten minutes ago had bought I might recall a couple of items but it's not standard practice to memorize a customers shop to the extent that at a later date one could say "Ahh, I remember you, you're the one that bought 3 litres of white lightning"

If someone is buying alcohol for a minor they never take the minor into the shop with them, Ive seen it happen many times myself. The minor places their order witht he adult, hands over the cash and waits outside.

I always get asked ID STILL for alcohol and fags (even when the age was 16 lol) and im far passed 18. I got refused cigarette papers once when I was heavily pregnant and with a wedding ring on my finger  (note: they were for my dh as i dont smoke at all let alone during pregnancy)

    To Bamber19:

I know. I use to work in retail (not supermarket) but in shops with a smaller range of goods. These were busy shops in travel locations such as Motorway Service Stations & Airports. The transactions were short and quick. I'd often more hours on end serve people at a rate of 4 a minute. Whilst serving them very little of my time was spent looking at their faces, probably 2 or 3 seconds as most of the transaction involved scanning then the money side.

So you'd see 4 faces every minute for 2 seconds per time. Theres no need to remember the faces, it's not like you get a memory test at the end of the shift so you don't concentrate on that. I'd often get people coming in 10 minutes later saying "I brought this 10 minutes ago................." you don't remember even if it was 10 minutes ago. To them they may have spent 2 or 3 minutes looking at me in a queue then 15 seconds looking at me whilst I did the transaction & in the last 10 minutes they wouldn't have encountered 40 people you haven't really looked at like I had. So no wonder it was easier for them to recognize me than the other way around.

But they had a similar experience................!

It's the same as this. Your in a busy environment with thousands of people you may glance at for a split second. If one of those people came back up to that person and said "I walked past you 10 minutes ago" would they remember?

    Thats what it's like!

I recognise most of the staff in the supermarket I shop at, but thats because theres not many faces to remember, not a constantly changing sea of people which they look at. Thats why it's not the same.

I've already explained this though during the first or second page of this thread. It's so easy to understand but for some reason the op can't get her head round it.
