Yes maaf don't allow 1899. 18185 etc, and I stand corrected that it is currently allowed by pn!

But the main point of my post (that the claimed £47+ savings if you switch to pn is misleading) is unchanged by this.

If you compare the like for like service of pn and bt, then although there appears a saving of £6.12 a year in the line rental costs (via pn), if you want the caller display and voicemail services, then they cost an extra £24 a year with pn - making them around £18 a year more expensive than bt!

But to compare like with like you need to take into account the monthly contract with PN.

BT will only give you inclusive evening and weekend calls for £10.50 if you sign up to a 12 month renewable contract (I realise that there are override providers, CPS services etc. but then it's not like for like) otherwise you have to pay £13.20 to get the same thing. (£10.50 line rental + £2.70 for E+W)

So, if you want to compare "like for like" you need to factor that in too (which may be impotant to some people). Therefore, to not be tied in for 12 months at a time for BT E+W with caller ID & 1571 = £13.20/month. With PN the equivalent would be £11.99/month.

My post was as a moneysaver! The suggestion from pn is that you can save £47+ by switching to them, but this isn't the true picture, if you really want to save money!

I did post that you can get free evening and weekend calls with bt (via primus).

That way you have no need to enter into a bt contract, and get your telephone service (including voicemail and caller display) at a much cheaper rate than via pn.

You quote £11.99 a month with pn, but use BT + Primus it will only be £10.50.

The free calls are for 90 minutes duration (redial before the 90 minutes are up to continue the call free) with Primus, but only for 60 minutes with PN.

Additionally, you can get calls to mobiles capped at 20p (max. call duration 20 mins) with Primus. (PN charge from 5 to 20.5p a minute!)

    Hi Quentin,

I'm no expert on call pricing :)

You say that Primus cap charges to mobiles @ 20p. Are their lower prices cheaper than ours also? I'd always thought that our call charging to mobiles was extremely competitive with only calls to Three Mobile being expensive (which is normal).

    @Quentin

I don't disagree with you on the money saving aspects and you are quite right in what you say.

I was only trying to point out that, for those who may want a "one provider" solution without having overrides and CPS, you have to be careful about the contract. BT will only offer evening and weekend calls at £10.50/month if you sign up for a 12 month renewable contract. If you want to be able to leave without having to wait up to a year to do so then it'll cost £13.20/month for the same thing - which PN can do for £11.99 (or £9.99 if you don't want caller display or 1571).

Anyway, I'll duck out here and leave the thread for what it's intended lest it goes further OT.

The primus penny mobile tariff (where the call only costs 20p for up to 20 minutes) is a free bolt on.

All calls to a mobile are charged at a fixed rate of 20p for up to 20 minutes. For longer calls you need to redial.

If you know a call is going to be brief and you don't want to pay 20p you can override primus and route the call elsewhere via the cheapest provider.

There is a list of cheap providers available by using the call checker on MSE:

You can see lots cheaper than pn!
