Could this solve the stiff leg/car dilemma ?
My brother broke his leg playing football when he was younger and was in a pot from ankle to well past his knee. Luckily it was his left leg so his mate removed the front passenger seat from his own car so brother could get himself into the car and sit on the back seat with his left leg stuck out in front of him resting on a bean bag.
Sounds like a bit of a carry on, but it meant he could keep his social life going.

I must admit, I was thinking something along these lines myself, if they do not want to buy another car.

  • Was at the local English Democrats annual mince-pie and mulled wine get-together last evening - the people there know a man who has a stiff leg and has a specially-adapted car through the motability component of DLA. Surprise surprise, DH could not have this because he's over 65.

I haven't asked DH for his decision, although some of the possibilities have been giving me sleepless nights, but our District Nurse asked him this morning. He wants to go for option 1 - replace the joint as it was, put the missing piece back and give him back the mobility he had before. He knows about the risk, but he says he wants a decent quality of life for the time he has left. If the other options were essential to save his life, that's one thing, but to go for e.g. amputation 'in cold blood' would be just too much. I agree with him and I'm willing to back him all the way, if his surgeon agrees to do it and if it proves to be possible.

    Thank you for this.

It's a load off my mind now a decision has been made. DH went for his appointment this morning, trauma clinic extremely busy, appointments being squeezed in before Christmas, staff off sick, consultant called away on an emergency. So DH saw the registrar and told him what he'd decided. He said he knows there are risks and he accepts that, but he wants a decent quality of life for the time he has left. So, it's Option 1 from choice. That being the case, there is 'no hurry', another appointment on 9th January (3 weeks from now) and continue with the daily IV antibiotics and another blood test just before the next appointment, hopefully the toxin levels will continue to fall and the planned reconstitution of his knee joint can go ahead sometime early next year. So now we all know where we stand, no need to continue agonising about this choice or that choice.

In 2006 and 2007 we (just DH and I) found some badly needed sunshine in October, in Lanzarote and Spain respectively.

But this year was the USA with the boys in August and we didn't get our autumn break.

So we're thinking of SKIing to the sun this Feb. A few suggestions of where would be good would be appreciated, or I'll have to go to the Travel thread. ;)

BTW that's sunshine but not too hot. :rotfl: I don't 'do' hot, and nearly evaporated in the USA! :rotfl:

  • Hallo everyone. Wishing you all a very Merry Xmas and a happy ski-ing or ska-ting 2009.

Savvy-Sue - If you are over 50 try Saga Travel Shop on the internet. They have a wealth of info on winter sunshine. Just back from Tenerife with them and it was lovely and warm.Cyprus and Madeira are good too. If you have cash to splash the world is your oyster. Barbados is heaven but only if you go all inclusive. But then again its very hot there. Have fun looking.

value for money and a good selection of warm places. Cyprus and Egypt should both be warm but not hot.

Best wishes to the ski-ers and skaters for Christmas and 2009.

  • A happy and peaceful Christmas to everyone, and a bright and hopeful New Year.

Our best Christmas present is being together, DH not stuck in hospital, still has all the bits and pieces God gave him, including 2 legs! We had our usual Christmas morning breakfast - scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, toast and coffee - and the District Nurse arrived in the middle of it! Couldn't be helped - at least we live in a country where such highly-professional people exist and will give essential care in own home.

What else? Not a lot. No presents - the best present is being here together, warm and comfortable, enough to eat and able to relax in peace in our own home. Very many people in the world can't say as much, so we're very very thankful. We've got a rolled turkey-breast to cook later followed by 'Duchy Originals' Christmas pudding and a bottle of Rudesheimer wine.

    Best wishes to all

  • We're having Aberdeen Angus Steak and Trimmings (a treat for us here!).

This morning we have walked round the village and delivered our Christmas Cards.

A quiet, but nice, Christmas day.
