Renting with a dog

I wouldn't tell them upfront. View the places you like and if you find one you want, tell them you'll take it as long as you can have a dog there. That gives them an incentive to say yes, if they know you actually want to rent it.
That's what we did to get a cat. The letting agent asked the landlord and he agreed. We got it in writing with any conditions too (ie they have said we have to put a cat flap in at our expense and have the carpets professionally cleaned at the end of the tenancy).
With our last agent you had to get permission from the landlord, but also pay a non-refundable fee of £150! Hence our hamster was "illegal", but I don't think it's a good idea to have an illegal bigger pet.0 -
my landlord knows about the dog but not about the exotic pets I keep :cool:0

Hi I'm a LL and standard contract says no pets without written permision. An "illegal" hampster would not bother me or a dog or cat etc but the clause is there to stop as you say the Chav with 10 pit bulls for dog fighting moving in and saying "The lease says I can have pets!". Remember despite what is said on these post LL is a person as well LOL. Be honest and you won't leave yourself open to be in breach of your lease/ rental conditions.Debts as of 01/june/08

I agree with bobby-boy. I am a landlord and appreciate honesty, you treat people with respect and hopefully they will do the same. I have a golden retriever (hairy and a bit messy) and so have no problem with a tenant having an animal. Years ago when was going to rent and had a dog, it was difficult, so ended up buying. I never understand people stipulating, no pets, no kids, as mentioned on a previous thread not everybody renting can be the perfect "couple".
I think most landlords would look at the individual's circumstances and go from there.
Good luck in finding a place.0 -
Thanks a lot everyone, going into the LA's offices has really made a difference and they have already identified a few properties where the LL will allow a pet.
I guess the "no pets" answer is just the standard one they give to people over the phone :rolleyes:0 -
My landlord NO WAY would let me bring my dog when I moved in and had to leave him with my mum. She's nearly 73 and Tyrone is a Boxer so a bit of a handfull and my mum finds it really hard to cope. I have a park right near me too but the LL still said NO. Fraid all you can do is visit your dog when pos. I think its cruel to deprive a person of their pets when they rent somewhere. Tyrone is my baby and he misses me as much as I miss him:(0
