Thank you for all your good wishes - they are really helping. You have to grieve.

I'm concentrating on all the things she did, how loving she was to our son, how funny she could be.

She's probably trying to use St Peter's leg as a scratching post as I type, and knowing Shadow she'll be getting away with it.

    Miss her so much.

Animals can sometimes be your best friends cant they :). I really feel for you - but she was a good age. I bet she is also missing you, but she is looking down on you all. Maybe in the future you could have another cat :). RIP xxx

We still have the 'kitten' (fourteen years old) and I have been mulling over the idea for a guinea pig. DS loves animals and is missing the old lady even if he is only 16 months, and the kitten is being a real PITA, missing her old friend.

I am quite sure that in the future we will have plenty more pets - DS loves all animals so much. I am sure Shadow is doing just fine, she had a knack for that! I just miss her so much.

  • Well she is booked in tomorrow morning for a flush out of her yucky cavity which is probably filled with infection, which in turn is causing all the swelling around her eye, and they will do a biopsy at the same time - in case it is covering something more sinister. It is amazing that if she were human she would be complaining, but cats just seem to soldier on! Cross everything. We've prepared the kids as much as you can!

    Hev,

I have just read through this whole thread with tears in my eyes. I am so sorry for you and hope you and the family are doing ok.

  • Just put the phone down from the vet - and the news is as I thought - she has a fibrosarcoma - an inoperable tumour. My DH is away until Monday night so can't do much more until we can speak. She is comfy at the moment, but her eye does occasionally irritate. Not sure what to do now or when to do it, but her days are numbered.

Oh no :( I'm sorry to hear this, does the vet advise just seeing how she gets on for now? Poor girl.

Hev, how's your other cat getting on now she's had a bit more time to adjust? Hope she's OK?

    I am so, so sorry.

Me and OH decided that while she still could enjoy eating, cuddling, catnip and sunbathing then we would keep going. We she started to look unhappy, that's when we would do the hard and kind thing. You will know when your old lady has had enough. If you trust the vet, ask for their opinions. I have never yet heard of a vet that would want an animal to suffer.

I have found that talking about her and sharing the crazy things Shadow did really helped me.

Tishywish - our 'kitten' Smoke is still missing her old sparring partner. She has spent more time cuddling me in the last week or so than she has ever done. DS is also missing her as well. Tbh, me and OH are still really missing her. But she was with us for 18 years, its normal. We will just keep thinking of her and remembering the good times.

I would also like to say thank you again for all the support we have had - it has really, really helped.

    Just had to say...

I had left a card addressed to OH for him to open, but he forgot. It finally got opened today.

It was a sympathy card from the vets. It was a really lovely card. I'm copying the poem.

If it should be that I grow weak,
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
then you must do what must me done,
for this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad; I understand,
don't let your grief then stay your hand,
for this day more than all the rest,
your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
what is to come can have no fears,
you'd not want me to suffer so,
the time has come to let me go.

Take me to where my needs they'll tend,
and please stay with me to the end,
hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.

Please do not grieve it must be you,
who has this painful thing to do,
we've been so close, we two these years,
don't let your heart hold back the tears.

The card was a printed card, but it was personally signed.

    Missing Shadow so much.

I've had the same poem but the last verse was slightly different

So take me where my needs they`ll tend,
Only stay with me until the end.
Please hold me close and talk to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
We`ve been so close over all these years,
Don`t let your heart hold any tears.
From pain and suffering I`ve been saved,
and now my tail its last has waved
Please do not grieve it should you
Who must decide this thing to do.
I know in time that you will see
It is the greatest kindness you do for me.

Big hug to everyone who's lost a treasured pet and is probably in tears reading these words
