  • I have BG homecare & called them out today because I can only get hot water when the central heating in on. I can't just set the water to come on a couple of times a day, it just doesn't work.

The man came out & messed around with it for a white & declared that the wiring had problems, it was a pre existant problem & so isn't covered. He could get the nheating working & then he could get water heater working but wiring wouldn't allow him to water working independantly from Heating. He checked on a price to rewire my system & the quoted me £240. I thought it was a little expensive so I haven't booked anything with them yet. I do however accept that it was a pre existing problem & I need to pay for that.

While he was checking around the water tank he changed the valve, just in case it was causing the lack of hot water issue, I knew nothing about this at the time but told him it was replaced less than 12 months ago. He put a magnet on several of the copper pipes leading into my hot water tank & got an attraction. He said that there was a large build up of sludge & it would need powerflushing. Of course this isn't covered either & said it would be around £600. He said I'd be sent a quote. I didn't feel he was taking me for a ride at this point although I though it sounded expensive.

He then went on to advise me that If I had a new boiler I would get tyhe powerflush as part of the deal & it wouldn't cost me anything. I told him there was nothing wrong with my boiler (It's around 12years old), I only went on the homecare less than 12 months ago & 2 BG men, including the one who checked out my system before acceptance into the scheme said that the boiler was fine, a good reliable make. The BG man today was saying 'Oh but it's getting the parts for them now'. He is getting someone from BG to contact me regarding a quote for a new boiler. I'm not interested but I think I may have a visit just to hear what they want to tell me.

Do they think I'm an idiot & will spend probably several thousand pounds to replace a boiler that is working perfectly just to get a free power flush?

I think I'm going to try some local plumbers, hopefully find a good one & let them do the job for me.......it looks like having homeserve with BG wasn't a good idea. :(

welcome to the world of BG, check out corgi they do a care package as well & if they can't fix your boiler they will replace it but i think the boiler has to be a certain age so yours might not be covered under that
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Could I ask for a bit more information? How long has this problem been happening? Has it happened before?

Doesn't take much magnetite to pull a magnet, so that's not always a reliable indicator.

If I had a pound for everytime I've heard that.......

If the problem hasn't happed before then, a wiring issue is possible but not really where I would start to look. Feel free to pm me if you wish.

Just had BG out to fix problem I have on my boiler, I pay for Home Care which gives me unlimited call outs & all parts, he told me the main heat exchanger wanted changing, but they would only do this if I paid for a power flush as it was this causing the problems, cost £545. Ive just phoned BG about this & was told that the power flush is not covered in home care agreement, I asked how long do they garantee the power flush for, she said a life time. I explained that BG told me that when they installed my new boiler 2006 that they did a full power flush, so why do I need it doing again. I think some one is on a good little earner here, if I got a 3rd party to do power flush at half the cost of BG, then BG wont garantee it if problem comes back.

I would end your contract with BG

  • I have been a gas engineer for 15 years and would like to offer you this advice. a proffessional powerflush can make a unbelievable difference to your system, also it removes lime scale if you just repair your boiler plus just flush it through, I can promiss you it will return to give you trouble again, If you get a professional company to do it and give you a 12 month guarantee this will be well received by boiler manufacturers who if called out to a new boiler installation and find sludge/limescale or iron particles in your system they may not repair under your warrenty,.
Take or leave this advice, just trying to help you.

I've recently changed a radiator (corroded) where the customer was advised they needed a powerflush when the boiler was recently repaired. On my drain down, the water was clear, to the end, there was next to no black sludge in the radiator, even when I tipped it out and flushed it on the lawn to check for them, no cold spots on any radiators, and the system had been running perfectly before and after the repair. So I doubt they'll be bothering. Only thing they could do with is a magnaclean, but the installer piped it so badly, there's nowhere to put one without hacking into the wall, or taking the boiler out again and repiping to it.
  • I'm so confused over this powerflush business :)

We have a newish boiler fitted in 2006 (a condensing one not a combi) done under the warmfront scheme at the time. I don't think the system was powerflushed but all the radiators did have thermostatic valves fitted.

It's also a small bore system, we have in the past had a few radiators moved around. One in particular was installed new off the system.

The radiator in the bathroom has not been working for a while, so have corgi cover and the valve was replaced, made not a scrap of difference. So they are now saying we need a power flush to sort the system out. The guy who came to service the boiler under corgi didn't report "kittling" of the boiler at the time, the guy who replaced the radiator value said it was keittling" and something should have been fitted to it when it was installed ?

We do seem to have a lot of air in the system because turning some rads off will alter things, they do have cold spots on some of the rads. Now I'm happy to have a power flush done, but will it sort out a blockage in the pipes reading this thread? Also the guy who serviced the boiler (did a gas safety check for us) after the rad valve had been replaced and said it carried with it a risk of a pipe that was corroded developing a pinhole leak.

So what do we do for the best?
