  • Have just been quoted £2200 by British Gas to change a 20year old boiler in a bungalow, system is vented with seven rads, the existing boiler is making a sort of moaning noise as it heats up. This stops the instant the firing stops, have always used fernox in system and tried boiler silencer.
Price includes system treatment, power flush, Magnetic system filter and one year Homecare 200. They also say they will fit an automatic bypass valve and wiring so the pump continues to run after motorised valves close.

    Price sounds good for BG

It does sound like a competitive quote for BG. How good a quote it is depends upon which boiler they propose to use.

Some will find this claim contentious, but if you don't have microbore pipework go for a Vaillant everytime.

  • Hi wonder if anyone can help me. I got up yesterday to no hot water. Having a BG 400 homecare policy they came and the engineer told me that the valve had blown due to the amount of gunk in my heating pipes.
He replaced the valve but advised that it wouldnt last long and that we would need a Powerflush which is excluded under the policy with a magnetic filter to stop the issue reoccurring at a price of £825 inc VAT.
However everything I have read on here relates to the radiators not working - My radiators are fine and heating up nicely.
Is a powerflush really the best/only option. I am afraid I am not very knowledgable about heating and water systems and am not sure that this is the right option.
Many thanks if you can help.

:eek::eek: - unless you've got a REALLY big house that seems way over priced, I had a few quotes from local companies for a powerflush a couple of weeks ago and it was around £400 (12 radiators, unvented, condensing).

Are BG saying that your central heating system won't be covered unless you have a Powerflush?

No they havent said that ........yet.

Its an end of terrace 3 bed house with 9 radiators. The system was in when we purchased the house and has been serviced regularly.

I am more concerned that everything I have seen re powerflushes relates to the radiators not heating up - whereas in this case its my hot water not heating up.

You could get that same job done for around £350 / £400.

I agree. Don;t waste your money paying BG prices.

Should be between £395 and £450 depending upon your boiler, pipework sizes and layout.

Feel free to ask for more info.

    All the best

  • BG offered to replace my boiler with the cheapest one they did for £1600, but on paying monthly went up too £4,000 odd... I managed to find a power flushing company who did it all for £1250.

Sludge build up can affect all parts of your heating system, pump, zone valves, heat exchangers etc. The problem with BG engineers is that they are on commision for gaining extra work . Best to get the water in the system tested. This can be done for about £40.

As other posters have stated you can get a powerflush and magnaclean type of filter done for about £300- £400.
