    Did you connect the phone end of the modem through a microfilter? If the broadband is still active on the line then you'd need a microfilter for the dial up modem still on the voice line.

    Yes, i did think maybe the download speed would be a bit 1980s. :D

    You know, I have already done what the instructions say in my previous attempts - albeit for one (possibly crucial) detail. In the dialup box that comes up after you make the new connection it asks for the username. On aol you enter your username WITHOUT the @aol.com bit at the end, so that's what I did on the new laptop too. And the aol techie bods didn't tell me to do any different. But the instructions you link to there say to put the whole interntet address in the username slot. So perhaps i will try that then

    <prepares for yet more failure>

    Hurray!

    I am now speaking to you from my new laptop! Cheers for that tonyhague, you gave me the one crucial bit of info that about 1000 calls to tech support missed.

    Thanks for the input everyone!

    not yet! tell them why they should never use their isp email address unless they fancy being tied in forever, or a lot of bother telling everyone a new one...

    ;)

    I've said before on here about using something like Gmail for your email address, more specifically better to have a minimum of two, one CLOSE friends/family and another for general use.
    Anyway I thought I'd gone on long enough. :D
    Move along, nothing to see.

    All you may have missed was to put @aol.com after your username so AOL's username becomes: username@aol.com
    A classic AOL newbie's mistake (took me ages to find out myself).
    You should definitely be able to connect without the horrible software.
    Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
