Hello, I have been driving myself insane trying to install aol for windows vista on my lully new acer laptop. Clearly i am very stupid and in need of guidance!

I have managed to download aolvr on my old laptop, then onto a removable hardrive, which i then plugged into into new laptop and tried to transfer it that way but the file won't open. I can't seem to find a setup file and the whole thing just seems to be so much more difficult than it needs to be. I am getting tired and stressed!

I will call aol tech support in the morning I guess, but wondered if there is anything obvious I'm doing wrong in the meantime that needs pointing out. Ta.

why oh why oh why oh why would you want to install the aol bloatware on a pristine pc? your internet connection should work without the software, and the aol mail can (could be) accessed via any email client, including outlook

I'm also on Virgin (cable), they gave me a CD but I've never used it.

The CD, whatever the isp, generally loads your PC with lots of unnecessary carp e.g.the isp's customised browser/email client.

An example is my neighbour who insists he has to use the AOL software because that's his isp, it clogs his PC.
He is also a pensioner, and has got all his emails saved via the AOL browser, now he is afraid to move isp, because of the hassle involved in setting everything up from scratch.
If you don't use their software, if you change provider, then all your browser and email programs carry on as before.(apart from possibly a couple of settings).

    So don't use the CD, for XP- Start/Control Panel/Network Connections/Network Tasks---Create a New Connection.

    I'll get off my soapbox.
    Move along, nothing to see.

not yet! tell them why they should never use their isp email address unless they fancy being tied in forever, or a lot of bother telling everyone a new one...

Tony, how will I get an intenet connection without the software? I don't have any isp software loaded on the new laptop. Am quite happy not to install aol if there is another way!

Although I've got my next 3 months free off aol due to some negotiations so don't particularly want to pay out for a new isp when I don't have to yet. It's windows vista on the new laptop.

There's a handy guide here that should get you online pronto. Gies two methods of doing it, one of which is basicaly what Spud said above.

It's my problem, it's my problem

And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Thanks Bill and spud, have tried both those methods several times, it just says my username/password is invalid (I typed in the username and password i use for aol), so that is why I am stuck!

Well I picked up a tiscali cd cos i think I might go with their broadband eventually but thought i'd sign up for the dialup payg just to get me online and maybe download aol for vista that way. But can't even connect through a dialup connection.

The aol bods have told me the reason I can't connect to them is cos I don't have a router, just a BT voyager adsl modem. If I had a router i would be able to connect without the software but with just the modem I need the software to be able to do it. So I will wait for disk to arrive in the post. I smell horseshit in the air though! But will be patient for a couple of days and see if I have success when the software arrives!
