the bt voyager makes a pretty poor doorstop, but that is about its best use. i'm getting a bit confused (poorly atm, so probably just me) do you subscribe to aol broadband or dialup? all the advice has related to bband, your modem is bband, but don't aol supply a modem/router? a little research shows that some voyager modems are locked, so wouldn't work with another isp anyway, plenty of good modem/router deals out there from about £20

I am on aol broadband which i access through a BT voyager adsl modem. When i rang today they said they would send me a free wireless router but only if I signed an 18 month contract - no thanks i said!

So that's why i thought I'd try and sign up to a dialup service, just to get online and download aol for vista. So plugged phoneline straight into laptop, bypassing voyager and using laptop internal modem instead. But it wouldn't connect through the dialup connection, no doubt because dialup is rubbish.

I will deffo look at alternative broadband deals, it's just i have 2 months free broadband left on aol so don't want to pay any extra on an alternative service right now - I'll just get my 2 free months then switch.

Are you saying you signed up to AOL's dial up service? Did they give you a different username/password for that? Are you using the windows network connection (created a new dial up connection, not sure what process is in Vista)?

If your broadband is with AOL there's no reason to use AOL for dial up, they're two completely separate systems.

No, i didn't sign up to aol dialup. I am on aol broadband on my old laptop, which works fine. On my new laptop i tried to sign up to tiscali dialup payg because I can't seem to get aol broadband connected on it without the aol software disk.

So you're using a Tiscali username/password and phone number for the dial up?

Yes, got all that registered. Plugged phoneline straight into laptop. Set up the network connection. Clicked connect and wouldn't connect. error message referred to the remote computer so perhaps the dialup service is oversubscribed? Have rung tiscali and tried different numbers but same scenario, they have also taken me through the set up process and ran modem query etc to check internal modem is working.

I was only trying it just to see if i could get online at all with the new laptop, and to then download aol for vista cos i'm too impatient to wait 2 days for the disk to arrive. So hopefully when the aol software arrives I can use it with my rubbish voyager on the new laptop for a couyple of months before i upgrade to a better router/wireless system.

    instructions!!

thought id go find out how big a file it would be on dialup, guessed it would be a few happy hours...;)

the instruction link above was clearly on the aol download page (i was surprised to see it there), once the instructions have been followed there should be no need for the aol sofware
