New NHS Dental Charges From 1 April 2008

I made an appointment for the dentist to have a look (June 9th was the earliest) but if my tooth falls off they will see me straight away and two days later I'd have a tooth on my plate apparently)
Think I'd better pop in and see them and ask about the cost.
I'm sure when the dentist treated me at Christmas it was going to be much cheaper that £198...............I'll find out tomorrowMary

It may well be the full band 3 charge, it would only be free if the restoration on that tooth failed within the first 2 months after it was done (known as the 2 month rule)
the 12 month guarantee would not apply in this case due to the fact that it was a patch up rather than a permanent solution to the problem.
You can certainly ask for nothing!
...Linda xxIt's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.0 -

Unless they are seriously wonky, you'll be unlikely to get it on the NHS, in which case the usual ball-park figure for a course of orthodontics is £2-£3k.
Bear in mind though that the treatment will last a good couple of years, and the orthodontist will almost certainly have some arrangement to pay the fee over the treatment period rather than all up front.
Probably best to wait until you're qualified and earning properly. The teeth aren't going anywhere, and it will work just as well in a couple of years time as today. Do make sure you still visit a good general dentist regularly in the meantime, so that they are in good condition when the time comes to get started with the moving around. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

I wonder if anybody could explain something to me pls, went to a dentist today for the first time in years, i was informed over the phone that they did sedation and were taking on new NHS patients, is it right that as an nhs patient(im on incap ben and applied recently for dla) i have to pay an extra £150 for each sedation and also an extra £150 for each extraction? I was under the belief that it was capped?, this is all very confusing stuff0

those are private charges. they may be treating you as a nhs patient BUT the sedation clinic may be private. you need to ring them and find out whats going on.0 -
What Alison says is right.
They may be taking on NHS patients, and they may do sedation sessions, but did you ask them if they do sedation sessions on the NHS?
These are private charges.
I'm not an expert on how NHS rules apply to sedation. They always used to be the one exemption for the old 'mixing' rules where you weren't allowed to provide a mixture of NHS and Private treatment to the same tooth. You could provide NHS treatment under a private sedation.
Sedation takes a lot of time, training and special equipment. It really wouldn't be financially possible to provide it in an ordinary general practice on the NHS.How to find a dentist.

thanks for the reply's, i dont really have a problem for paying for the sedation, but is it right that they were stating £150 for each extraction? i would have thought they would have been covered by the NHS?
The end result of the visit was that i paid for the x-ray i had and the very uninterested and hurried dentist said he would refer me to the local hospital because of my phobia and the condition my teeth were in( i had to take vallium to get through the front door) but they dont accept everybody that is refered and i had to sign a purple form to say i accept NHS dental charges? This is all so very confusing and the dentist was not at all interested in employing any kind of social skills :-(0
