Think it's official that I won't make the challenge either. In May I spent £572.67, taking my total for the year to £,2433.50. My biggest disaster area is going out eating and drinking with friends (over £100 this month alone) but going to the pub and to a normal meal out (like a nice pizza or wagamama) is so much a part of my social life that I don't want to give it up and I'm not explaining my 4K challenge to friends. So...I guess my "cost of living"* amount will be £6K based on current figures

    * includes everything in NYK's list minus utilities and mobile but plus socializing and other unnecessary spends

congrats mumzy, 4 days is a BIG milestone where i'm concerned. i was always attacked by the 'threes'. three days not smoking, huge cravings, if i got past that - huge cravings at three weeks. failed a few times, but happy to report after i finally passed the three week test i didn't start getting cravings after three months :) so stick to it, you can do it! :T

i won't write too much as i'm getting more and more drunk by the minute ;)

... but before i go, i would just like to say to all that feel bad and worrying about the challenge, treat it as a learning experience, we're lucky enough to be doing this challenge out of choice, failing isn't really failing, it's just helping us set a realistic target for ourselves next year :)

right, back to my wine, i'll report back in the week :D

ps - jumblebee, nyk, look out for come-ons from 'misterdeet' next thurs :p i never knew you could pm on gala haha :rotfl:

    Part of the Furniture
You guys have really inspired me to take a better look at my finances.

I am on maternity leave - i had my baby boy 3 weeks ago and already have a little boy of 19 months. I found your thread when i started my maternity leave at the end of march, and it has taken me till now to read your whole thread from the start.

I joined spending diary in April, and realised we spend a fortune. I then opened myself an ISA, and transferred money from my ING savings to the ISA, plus started my DH's off with some money. We have changed our gas and electric suppliers to try and reduse spending. I was just looking at May's spending diary, and i still spent a fortune. Not quite as bad as April, but DH had 2 weeks off work, so a lot less on petrol/diesel this month, and also MIL bought us some food shopping, but on the negative side needed to buy presents for my parents 30th wedding anniversary, and a wedding present, and 3 close family members birthdays.

I am seriously shocked by what we spend as i like to think we are quite money conscious and certainly don't 'treat' ourselves to lots of things. Also, the kids are mostly wearing hand me downs as my 2 sisters have 3 boys older than mine.

I will be lurking on your thread trying to come up with some ways to reduce our spends further and make the most of being on maternity leave. As it will be my 2nd year off work in such a short time i don't want to end up with no savings after this time as when i do go back to work it will be part time, and childcare costs will pretty much eat up my wages so no chance to replace the savings.

    All rather scary.

Thanks for giving me the virtual kick up the bum to get my head out of the sand.

definitely agree the kids shouldn't suffer, but (and i might be in for some flak here) that will happen from time to time regardless, the best mums in the world will have a bad day, getting crap at work, anniversary of a bad event etc, none of it the kids fault but mums aren't superhuman they'll crack at times and that's perfectly normal. still for the sake of the kids having an easy time when it *can* be helped, nicotine replacement could probably work wonders, just be sure not to get hooked on the replacement stuff ;)

If it's any help, here are some dates that worked for me:
    What Quitting Can Do
    20 Minutes To 15 Years

    20 Minutes After Quitting
    Blood pressure drops to normal
Pulse drops to its normal rate
Body temperature of hands and feet increases to normal

    8 Hours After Quitting
Carbon monoxide level in blood returns to normal
Oxygen level in blood increases to normal

    24 Hours After Quitting
    Chance of heart attack decreases

    48 Hours After Quitting
    Nerve endings start to regrow
Ability to smell and taste is enhanced

    72 Hours After Quitting
Bronchial tubes relax, making breathing easier

2 Weeks to 3 Months After Quitting
    Circulation Improves
    Walking becomes easier
Lung function increases up to 30%

1 To 9 Months After Quitting
Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, shortness of breath decrease
Cilia regain normal function in lungs, increasing ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce infection
    Overall energy increases

    1 Year After Quitting
Excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker

    15 Years After Quitting
Risk of coronary heart disease is the same as that of a non-smoker.

Soon as I passed one milestone I really didn't wanna fail before the next :)

They mightn't even be fact for all I cared, might just be the 'placebo' effect but I swear I hit a certain time and felt the benefit! If it's a placebo, then (to quote the simpsons i think) "give me more of them placebos!!"

right, back when i'm sober. honest this time ;)

edit: not sure if you have a local pool that's affordable but one thing i can recommend is swimming. go swimming a couple times a week and i will bet you anything that after 3 weeks not smoking you'll feel twice as fit as you did previously did! it's the 'lung capacity increases by 30%' thing at three weeks that kept me going, i swear it felt more like 100%! not sure how old your yungins are, but if they're the right age to learn to swim (i was in arm bands @<12 months, it's never too early) then you could maybe make it a fun family thing to do together too? anyway, good luck and i'll stop typing soon
