TV gone kaput, am looking for a new one any ideas?
Do not do gaming etc.
37" or above, LCD or plasma? Do they still do CTR? and if so would I be better with one of those?
Would like Freeview included and HD ready!
Had a look at this one from John Lewis
£599. free delivery and 5 year guarantee,(although not in stock at the moment), Amazon price £523. but only standard guarantee, that should not matter if JL price match as the 5 year guarantee is free!
Not really sold on wide screen but could put up with it.

John Lewis won't price match that. Only physical brick stores with strict criteria."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Basically if you're not going HD, stick with CRT as the image quality on LCD/Plasma on standard definition broadcasts is at best a "make do". The image quality on CRTs far surpasses LCD and Plasma on standard definition broadcast.
It's a real shame its chosen now of all times to go because had it been after the launch of Freesat, I'd have said to go for a LCD/Plasma as Freesat will be offering free HD channels. Freeview has no such plans.
Sony Trinitrons are still the best to go for and make sure its got integrated Freeview but you need to be quick as, AFAIR, Sony have stopped Trinitron production.
Something like this. Comes in smaller sizes..

Well there are plans and joint venture/working group as was pointed out to me when I made the same statement. But I think it may still be a while yet."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Derrick. Do you have Virgin cable at all? If so, this could affect your choice. The V+ box does a pretty good job of upscaling SD to HD, opening up your choice somewhat. If absolute picture quality is important to you (from SD sources)."...IT'S FRUITY!"0

Am not on cable!
Have been told CRTs are not in production any more and that LCD are winning over plasma,(similar as Betamax and VHS years ago), and that LCD will soon be the only ones!
I have borrowed a 26" tv, but will need to look for a new one,(unless mine can be repaired for reasonable cost), hence would like some advice on way to go.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Well for a start it's not similar to a format war because having a different display technology doesn't make it incompatible with anything. I'd say get an LCD if you want something under a certain size and plasma for anything over. It used to be that key rule of thumb cut off size was something like 37" but nowadays I guess that figure is more blurred. But to be honest in the end the only person who can decide which display technology is you. Go and take a look in your local TV/electrical stores. Some people can't stand LCD and some don't like plasma. The other consideration is that very large screens make it more economical to get plasma. But that's dependant on your budget versus size. Plasma is not going to stop being made for a while yet, remember the older the technology the more worn in and less problems it has. There won't be an outright "winner" because there's already newer display technologies being developed. Organic LED has been improving lots and is getting much nearer to being used as a TV display technology. Then there's also laser display TVs. Don't pay attention to what may or may not be stopped being produced in future. It has no bearing on buying a TV now. It's not like you're stuck into a certain upgrade path or specific compatible hardware. It's independant to that."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Well you can still buy new CRT TV's so someone is still making them. Not many companies though.
Personally if I was you I'd get hold of a second hand 32" CRT. You can get what was a very expensive TV a few years ago for next to nothing and for SD the picture wil beat an LCD hands down.
Then in a year or two when HD is more common and is available via Freesat and possibly Freeview buy an LCD or Plasma.
We'v egot V+ so have a HD source but we still use a CRT as I can't justify the cost of a good LCD/Plasma given how little HD content there is.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
