I bought some petrol the other day, at £1.07 per litre (there was no .9 just exact £1.07)

I always fill up by the litre so i know how my cars mpg is returning, when i went to pay, i was charged £10.71

I know its only a penny but i was confused, i asked the guy behind the counter how they worked it out to £10.71 when it should have been £10.70 and he said 'don't ask me i haven't driven since 1983'

How many decimal places were given in the litres you used? 2, maybe?
Lets say you used 10.0049 litres. This would have shown up as 10.00 litres.
How much does 10.0049 litres cost at £1.07 a litre?
    10.0049 x 1.07 = 10.705243
This has to be rounded to the nearest penny and so you were correctly charged £10.71.

For a penny, I would rather spend my time (and life) doing more important things than chasing such errant suppliers!

Oh and to answer the OP's original question about suing for a penny...no you can't. The case would be quite rightly thrown out.

    And as such I am.

I'm ranting about it on a website and now if you type paramountzone overcharges into google you get this thread and another.

I guess simple things please simple minds.:T

For the record I believe that the is a minimum you can sue for is £7 but I have no idea why I believe that and have no facts to back up this assertion.

There is no minimum which you can sue for. However, the law adopts the principle of de minimis non curat lex. Or in English - it does not concern itself with trifling matters.

Re the google stuff, lets hope you don't get sued for libel, eh?

    Go ahead I say.

I can prove my allegation that Paramountzone overcharged me by the princely sum of 1p and refused to give it back.

However I doubt they'd risk the publicity.

a penny makes a pound (thts 100 of tem :)

something that was always taught to me by gran. course in those days a penny was worth a fair bit. But that doesnt mean it isnt anymore.

Casing point i went into tesco last week and my weekly shopping cam to £22.74
in change i had £22.73, i therefore had to put one item back - the lowest priority impulse item was a cadburys choclate at £0.34

(at that stage i realised how powerful 1p can be).

    Anothercase
you were at a place and need to buy a snack to stop the rumbles. the vending maching requires 35p for a packet of crisp. in change you have 34p (although you have £10 in your bag), you take a 1p from somebodys tesk whilst they are away to make up the 35p and buy the crisp.

in effect you have commited theft allbeit for that 1p and could end up with a criminal record.

an overcharge (regardless of the amount) is equivalent to taking money without conset as you had not authorised the payment for that amount to be taken.
