  • There areb qulified teachers of Dyslexia and tutors traind in ESOL. I would not know where to begin. In a mixed class of 20+ the learners need a qualified tutor.

The place has made it quite clear that there is no training available. I don't even have a current qualification in Adult Education.

I don't want to work for a company that cares so little forn their clients that they don't employ qualified staff.

To repeat myself again, yes there are qualified teachers in those areas, but Key Skills Tutors do not need to be qualified.

Is there anything stopping you at least having a go at the job?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Key Skills Tutors need a level 4 qualification.

!!!!!! tc Key Skills Tutors do not have to have any qualification (I do know this from experience)!

Is there another reason why you do not wish to take this role?

  • I obviouly don't know your experience in the field. But, every post I have seen for a Basic Skills tutor requires a Level 4.
There are differences between Basic/Essentiqal Skills and Key Skills. Especially if the Key Skills is in a job area not Literacy/Numeracy

But clearly you are wrong because you have been offered a job without a qualification at that level!

So, yet again, is there any other reason why you do not want to take this job? Otherwise, I cannot see the JCP being at all sympathetic.

  • I told the interviewer I was not qualified - he replied, I know....but we can't afford qualified staff! This is a government run Adult Training course!!

I accepted the job in the most stupid way - he asked if I was interested in the job. I understood that to mean " was I 'interested' " in the job - only realised as all the job details were being explained that he meant 'did I WANT the job.' That's Aspergers for you!

Can't see Disability advisor until I have definite diagnosais, which may take time.

Understand completely, my son is Aspie!

But otherwise I agree with dmg24. They obviously think you can do the job - why not try it and see how you go?
MY husband, a retired teacher who for a while taught a subject he had no qualifications in (but was interested in as a hobby) always said that you only have to be one step ahead of the students.

And you could approach the Dyslexia Institute for advice/materials with the dyslexic people.

I do agree with you that though it is digusting they have no funds for specialist teaching for these students with special educational needs.

BTW, I think you can see a Disbaility advisor, even though not diagnosed. My son is not diagnosed either and this was suggested to him. However, he got a job in the meantime.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

With all due respect dmg24 the OP has stated he/she is waiting for a diagnosis of Asperger's perhaps a little bit of empathy wouldn't go amiss in this case.

But what if he isn't diagnosed as having Aspergers? What if he is just got some quirky ways?
  • All my symptoms are Aspergers.
Because of this I can get 'fixed' on ideas and suffer severe anxiety. In this case, I am convinced I am not qualified, therefore I can't do the job. It makes sense to my mind.

Will try and see the Disability Advisor. Thought I had to wait.
