Benefit query - please help

Please help if you can...I'm in a real fix.

Quick explanation: I've been unempployed for a few years. Sent on government course (IAP) and then work placement. Training Provider verbally offered me a job, I verbally accepted - no contract signed. I can't do the job - not qualified. I have Aspergers - awaiting referal for diagnosis, so the interview was confusing. Job Centre didn't listen to my explanation, signed me off benefits.

Question: Can I go back to Job Centre and get Income Support again immediately if I refuse to take up this job?

  • Hi there, can you explain a bit more - why did they offer you the job if you are not qualified, and why did you accept it?

If you really do need to sign on again, I would see a Disability Advisor at the Jobcentre, they may have more help for you.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

I just wanted to say Hi, and welcome to the board.
  • I told the interviewer I was not qualified - he replied, I know....but we can't afford qualified staff! This is a government run Adult Training course!!

I accepted the job in the most stupid way - he asked if I was interested in the job. I understood that to mean " was I 'interested' " in the job - only realised as all the job details were being explained that he meant 'did I WANT the job.' That's Aspergers for you!

Can't see Disability advisor until I have definite diagnosais, which may take time.

I see.Do you think(possibly) having Aspergers would make it hard for you to do that job? Is that what you are saying?
  • To an extent, yes...but more importantly about half the group have dyslexia - severe in at least 4 cases - unableto deal with alphabet. And 2 require English as a foreign language. I have no dyslexia or ESOL training. The group are unamployed jobseekers. They need qualified help.

ok.I don't know how jobcentres work,I hope someone else can come along soon who can answer your query.
  • think OP was asking about status of claim? if job not suited to you / you to the job, i think you can make a 'rapid' reclaim/restart, to save doing all the firms again. that is if you are not carrying on with the job?

Firstly, you do not need to be qualified to teach either ESOL or those with dyslexia. Yes, it would help, but it is by no means essential. I would imagine that the employer would intend to give you some training when you started the job?

Is there anything to stop you taking the job, and then resigning if it did not work out?
    Gone ... or have I?
