I'll move this to the Motoring Board :)

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

The camera gun is evidence surely?

As long it has been calibrated correctly, recently, and the officer also has the documentation showing they have been correctly trained in the use of the gun ...
• The police do not use radar guns. They use LTI20-20's which are laser devices - and demonstrably inaccurate (which is why some US states have banned their use).

You should go to pepipoo and ask. Personally I do not think anything will happen.

Am i wrong in thinking that by law they have to put up signs within a certain distance of the camera saying that they are conducting speed checks or that there are cameras in operation?

Yes, you're wrong. They can hide behind a tree and jump out if they want. If you don't think you were speeding, by all means take it to court and plead your case. If you were a couple of MPH over, you're still speeding and still liable for prosecution. Are you sure you were aware of the limit or were you doing what you "thought" the limit was?

out of nowhere spotted a police officer pointing a speed gun at me, he was hiding round the corner of a dead end road with no lighting and no high visibility jacket on (so he was basically invisible right up to the point where he was around 20 ft in front of you),

Irrelevent to whether you were speeding or not.
Me and the Mrs both looked at each other and said "what was that all about",

I would be happier if you were watching the road and the speedometer, rather than looking at your wife.

Check out page 45 of the "Code of Practice" for speed cameras.

http://www.pepipoo.com/files/ACPO/RPET_Code_of_Practice_Nov_04.pdf

Health and Saftey says that "High visibility clothing must be worn by officers working at the roadside.

Perhaps when you reply, you should also bring up this fact and send a copy to your local chief of police.

If it was a laser and it wasn't used correctly then it's very easy to produce an incorrect reading.
Go over to pepipoo and ask there.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if one day someone actually said i was caught speeding, i was bang to rights and i'm going to take my 3 points and £60 and thats the last we hear of it.
• If it was about road safety, they would pull you over and have a word in your ear. It is about revenue raising and very little else.

Imagine knocking somebody over, maybe killing them, only to receive a NIP a week or so later saying you were speeding 5 minutes before the incident but the Policeman didn't pull you over (because he wanted to raise as much revenue as possible and stopping you would have wasted valuable revenue raising time). The Policeman could have prevented that incident but chose not to.

The truth is the Police of today are thickos who are better qualified at raising revenue than detecting and preventing crime.

The only way to beat them is to observe religiously all speed limits. It'll do little, if anything, for the death statistics and I fear the Police will just find another eay way to raise the revenue.

If we all went to Court rather than simply paying up, it would cause mayhem.

If they actually were speeding then yes. However laser devices are very sensitive to their usage.

To the OP:
what was the speed limit?
what speed did you beleive you were doing at the time?
what speed does the letter say?

Could this be one of those "local people are given speed guns and we write to drivers" operaions?
Happy chappy
