Cot Bedding for Newborn Baby

Hi, congratulations on your forthcoming arrival
The crib bale says it is 70x90 - that sounds small for a cot, or are you getting an actual crib?
Personally I wouldn't bother with it, it sounds like an expensive waste and I think you should only use cellular blankets with babies under 1yr, also cot bumpers are unsafe as they can lead to overheating (a risk factor in SIDS)
Just get a couple of sheets, a few blankets, and when your baby is big enough a grobag is much better as they can't kick them off.
Muslins - I have about 25 and it's still not enough
OMG! Am 9 days overdue and only have 6 muslins - must send someone to buy more!
I bought a jungle bedding set from toys r us a few months ago and regret it even before having the baby. It was £60 reduced to £40 so got seduced, its been in and out the packet too many times/had it too long to take it back. I didn't realise until recently it says on it bumpers shouldn't be used after 6 months (if it all according to some) and the quilt shouldn't be used until they are a year old. So whats the point of a matching set you can't actually use together????
I would recommend wilkinsons too and also sometimes boots do 3 for 2 bedding (make sure you join the parents club and buy it when using an extra points coupon). Also in my area (Hull) a shop called Boyes has very reasonable bedding but don't know if they have stores further afield.0 -
I bought a Zorbit crib-sized bale from the current Tesco sale for £13.99 - I didn't realise how cheap that was until DIL remarked on my bargain. They'd all gone when I went back for more (Swansea branch), but there may be some lurking in a different branch.
It included cellular blanket, fleece blanket, and two sheets - all cream coloured. Original price was £30.0 -
I used real nappies on my children when they were babies (the flat sort rather than the shaped ones) and I used to put a nappy under their heads in the cot in order to catch dribble/sick. Also very useful for putting over your shoulder as a burp cloth. Three children later I now still use them - :A as window cloths!0

All the cot bedding I needed for my little monster came from matalan. Very reasonably priced and have washed really well so far. I've got 4 fitted sheets (£4 for pack of 2), 4 flat sheets (£4 for pack of 2) and 4 fleece blankets (£4-8 each - got some in sale!!).
I find that is enough but I do tend to but a muslin cloth under his head as that area get messiest quickest so I can wash the muslin as soon as it gets dirty without having ti wash all the bedding which isn't always necessary.
We love grobags/sleeping bags! Charlie has got nice and snug in his bag whilst having his last feed so when he gets put into his cot its still snug to him and doesn't wake him up too much:heart2: Charlie born Aug 2007 :heart2: Reece born May 2009
:heart2:Toby born Apr and taken by SMA Dec 2012

We had a crib at first and found that just 2 sheets were enough as Chris was only ever sick occasionally at night and usually only a tiny bit, he had a brushed cotton sheet plus a cellular over him until he was big enough for a sleeping bag.
we used a bumper as he liked to roll around (and bang his head) when he was a few months.
bumpers are only a SIDS risk when the baby can move as they wont be near enough to them to be a risk unless they are physically able to move themselves.
Check out Linen warehouse if theres one near you I used to work for Zorbit and they sell excess/old stock to them (there are others but I can't remember them) I once saw a John lewis Seaside moses basket (made by zorbit) which JL sold for around £30/£40 in Linen WH for £15 they usually only have a few bits though.
have you visited Kiddicare.com they are cheapest for lots of stuff inc bedding
My top tip is get a fleece all in one sleep suit (tho u may have trouble as its s/s season not a/w) they're great for if you need to go out in car and baby falls asleep you can put them straight in bed without waking them to take coat of/ put on sleepbag.
Good luck and try to enjoy it!0 -
I have 8 week old twin boys, one of which has reflux and is a super-puker. They both share the same cot and all our bedding was a pressie from the Matalan sale. To save washing the whole bed every time I have made draw sheets from old single brushed cotton sheets. Draw sheets are not quite matress sized(without being tucked in) but they go across the matress at the head end. The middle in our case.
Both our cot matresses are from Ikea - about £35 for the top of the range. I got matress protectors in the Boots sale. Cot bumper was £2.50 from Ikea too.
I dont use muslins. Ikea (again!) do plain white hand towels for 29p. We have two dozen of those for mopping up, laying on the changing mat. Also have bought tea towels when they are drying.
Gro bags are fab. We have four (light weight tog, you can always add layers of blankets or long sleeved vests etc, you can't take away in summer) that were given to us. Beware of the size of the head hole for gro-bags. You have to be sure that they won't snuggle down into them in the night. The best for little ones have poppers under the arm pits so they can't wriggle down. Mine are Mothercare and Tesco.0 -

Don't bother with a cot, mattress and all the shenanigans to go with it! The nesting instinct can hit your pocket hard. I remember feeling quite panicked about being ready for the baby and did a couple of "emergency" shops before the baby arrived, but as long as you've got your boobs with you, the baby's not bothered about anything else! My children all co-slept with me until they were 2ish when they went straight to a full sized single bed in their own room. I needed no cot, mattress, listening device, sheets, blankets, quilt, mobile, bumper... quite a bit of money saved!
The biggest advantage was to my children's health and welfare and the sleep saving was most welcome! If you think it's a bit way out do a straw poll of your parent friends. Whilst many of them may not advertise it I bet you'll find many who spent time co-sleeping, "just to get him off to sleep but when I woke up he was still there", or ended up sleeping on the sofa or in a put-you-up in the baby's room. You'd be able to say goodbye to all the frustrating occasions of putting your sleeping baby in his cot only to have him wake and cry immediately he's out of your arms. And with all the money saved you could buy him a designer wardrobe, or treat yourself to a post natal massage or 6!!!0 -
When they are very small and sleep in a moses basket (up until around 3 months)you can buy cheap sheets or even recycle some you already have, and simply cut them up to the right size. I think you can get about 6 moses basket size out of one double sheet. Then you can go round the edge with a sewing machine on zigzag mode to stop it fraying - if you can be bothered. (in 3 months they probably won't fray drastically).0

I really wouldn't bother. I only used sheets with both of mine. (oldest is 2, youngest is 5 months). With both, I used grobags from bump to 3. They are more expensive than others, but they're much better quality. My Son is sleeping in the bags I used for my daughter & they're still washing up well. Also, they come with a room thermometer and advice about clothing for babies during the night. They also offer 10% cashback on quidco.
What you will need are loads of muslins and bibs. I get through about 10 a day! Thanks to all the lovely people on here I have managed to cut my hours down to 2 days a week, allowing me to spend more time with my gorgeous Children. :j0
