Cot Bedding for Newborn Baby

How much bedding will I need for a new born baby and what?
The grandparents are buying the cot, mattress and Mothercare's Fun At The Zoo crib bale which includes a sheet, coverlet and bumper. I think the coverlet is the equivalent of a sheet and fleece blanket.
I would like some white sheets and blankets to compliment this rather than buying extra matching stuff . The Mothercare bedding starter set is £29.99 for 2 blankets, 2 fitted sheets and 2 flat sheets. I also have a couple more blankets that I have been given.
I have 10 muslins and have read the tip about putting them under the baby's head so he/she will throw up on them rather than having to change the sheet 5 times a day.
Is this enough? How often will I need to change the bedding on average. (I know - how long is a piece of string) Is there anywhere on the high street where I can buy cheaper bedding?
TIA

Hi, congratulations on your forthcoming arrival
The crib bale says it is 70x90 - that sounds small for a cot, or are you getting an actual crib?
Personally I wouldn't bother with it, it sounds like an expensive waste and I think you should only use cellular blankets with babies under 1yr, also cot bumpers are unsafe as they can lead to overheating (a risk factor in SIDS)
Just get a couple of sheets, a few blankets, and when your baby is big enough a grobag is much better as they can't kick them off.
Muslins - I have about 25 and it's still not enough :eek:0 -
Grobags or baby sleeping bags (£8 in ASDA) are excellent, they can't kick the covers off and are easily washable.
I had about 20 muslins for DD and needed twice as much, had about 12 for DS and only ever used 5 of them, so depend on how much of a dribbler you get !!Personal Loan: £11,488 3.7% Credit card: £5,946 0% Total = £17,4340 -

Argh. Dammit. I thought that was cheap seeing as a cot bumper is £20. Thank you for pointing that out.I'm going to be buying the stuff and the parents are given me the money.
More mussys - check.
So the Mothercare starter set should be enough?0 -
I just used to put clean towels uder my children's heads for when they brought any milk back up.
I used cellular blankets too.Karma - the consequences of ones acts."It's OK to falter otherwise how will you know what success feels like?"1 debt v 100 days £20000 -
If it is a crib you can use some ordinary pillowcases as sheets - I used two cotton ones for DS - as one wasn't quite long enough. One was slipped over the mattress from the top, and the other from the bottom. I then made sure the overlap bit was at the bottom by his feet so he couldn't get stuck.
We managed a week with blankets before we cracked and got a grobag suitable from 7lbs upwards - we've never looked back.
I know the matching bedding looks gorgeous, but you'll find a better use for the money - honestly! The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0 -
I had 3 fitted cotbed sheets, 3 flat sheets and a couple of thin blankets which done me fine. There was always a spare sheet (fitted or flat) for when one needed changing. I layered a sheet and a thin blanket, and only used a thicker coverlet type blanket when my baby was much older. I too used a grobag once they were old enough to be safe in it.
I had muslins coming out of my ears, as one of mine used it as a comforter too. Much better than a stuffed toy, as she was never fussy which one it was so they could be replaced regularly with a clean one! Asda does packs of 3 for around £3, in white, pink and blue. I found Mothercare to be quite pricey in comparison.
HTH, and congratulations.I won't suffer, be broken, get tired, or wasted

Congrats
Babies-r-us used to do a bedding bale which was about £20 nearly 5 yrs ago, came with 2 cotton fitted sheets, 2 flanelette flat sheets and 2 fleece blankets (1 of each in plain white and lilac). Neither of my boys worry about the lilac ones and still refuse to give up these blankets tho they're in beds! I bought 2 lots in case of sicky babies, but was lucky. Included the sheets when I sold the cot recently and was all still going strong.

Another grobag fan here! They are great and sooo much easier than blankets. I had them for my last child, from when she was about 5 months old, and if I were going to have another (which I'm not!), I would use them from as early as possible.
It really depends on how dribbly and/or sicky your little one is tbh, but I think you can never have to many muslins!
Re blankets and sheets: Do you have a dunlem store near you? I personally found Mothercare very expensive and the stuff didn't seem any better quality either. I certainly wouldn't get basics from there.0 -
Thanks for the tip about Babies R Us. We have one within driving distance but I've never been. ( I lie I was last there when I was 10) Their bedding bales seem more value for money.0

My poor puppy was swaddled for the first four months of his life, so I only used two fitted moses sheets and two swaddling sheets. Apart from that we had three cellular blankets for extra warmth. And of course the necessary muslins, which protected the sheets.
When he's ready to go into the cot (never! I refuse to send him there!) I have four sheets, three cellular blankets and that's it.
For now though we use the sleeping bags (I never understood how to cover a baby who likes to hold his legs up in the air)
Oh and most of my stuff came from Ebay.
Good luck sorting it out.
PS I think the coverlet is just a bedcover. Could use it as a playmat, but not a duvet. I wouldn't let mine near Joseph!:wall:0
