Have done a bit of research and it does seem that most of the nutrients especially antioxidants are destroyed by microwaving , and steaming is the way to go! Info was from New Scientist and quite up to date.
Re Killielila's post about tomatoes, it also apparently applies to carrots, they are more nutritious cooked.0 -
Unity you mentioned the little containers which have latex gloves in them, for colouring hair at home? When I used to colour my hair I thought those little containers were very good, and thought it a shame to throw them out. I gave my husband and sons one each and they keep small change in them for the parking meters and they really find them useful. They fill them up with small change as the amount goes down, so a good tip to keep the change in one place. They are still using them several years later:)Do a little kindness every day.;)0

Found that New Scientist article you mention:D:

I'd not visited that website before - but I might be doing so sometimes now - as I spotted various things that interest me:D:T0 -

Try 4 mins to start with and increase in minute bursts until just cooked. Remember to give it standing time as it will continue cooking during this time. You soon get used to guaging the timing for the quantity and yes they do retain their flavour. The only veg I don't favour in the microwave is runner beans.
However I did hear not so long ago that there had been research done and it was found that microwave cooking vegetables destroys something like 90% of the anti-oxidants, so I don't use this method so often now.
Does anyone know about this?
Bella.

After reading about the microwave I am thinking of getting rid because it takes up valuable space and I hardly use it anyway. But without the use of an oven(mine is !!!!!!ed!) is there another way to do jacket spuds? These are one of my "in a hurry" meals??? Could I cook a whole spud in a steamer for eg.....sorry if that is a stupid question lol!!!JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200

Hiya, what type of microwave have you got? I have been reading up on them and some have ovens like the cooker, grills as well as microwave cooking. Mine is a silver Sanyo microwave with grill. Once again a gift to be thankfull for. If I was to buy now I would choose a white Panasonic with covention cooking.
I would not be in a hurry to throw yours out as it is useful for heating up food and as you say jacket spuds. I was silly and threw out the grill stand thinking I would never use it and now so wish I still had it. Any one know whare I could buy another? If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

Thanks Mrs Thrifty, its just a cheap basic hinari model so no grill etc. Its just so annoying having worktop space taken up by something I use once a fortnight.
Anyway on a completely different subject I made my gloop and love it! We actually had a couple of sunny days this week so I have been hanging out my washing and it is all really soft and fresh smelling. Looks like milk though and as its stored in milk cartons I have put big labels on it just in case my ds who loves milk doesnt try to drink it...(not that he could pour it out because its very thick) but the temptation to try has been avoided lol!JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. Yea :j fuel bill still comming down. For 5 weeks we have managed to get the bill lower than the week before. Hopefully will show quite a few pounds less next week as we are thinking of turning the CH off today wile it is so warm. I have not used the TD in the last couple of weeks since the warmer weather and bedding can now go on the line.
I still go around turning switches off and it is a reward seeing it on the fuel bill.
