Following on from the thread on the last page about freezing tomato puree- it works out cheaper to buy it by the jar rather than the tube but when I've done that it goes mouldy before I've finished it. Perfect solution thanks and not one that I've thought of!

Made some beautiful crab apple jelly last week using apples from a tree in a public car park.
Picked 1.5kg and it made nearly 3 jars. As I couldn't see where I had been on the tree there is so much fruit on it, I went again today and picked about the same again, and there is still LOADS of fruit left.
Felt very furtive picking it and several people asked me each time what it was I was picking. I would like to think that someone else will be inspired to pick some too.
Found this recipe for Crab Apple Bread, http://www.grouprecipes.com/75009/crabapple-bread.html might try that instead, or even some Herb Crab Apple Jelly0 -

He won't eat homemade soup but if he knew what went into the shepherds pie and whizzed up into Sunday's gravy, he'd be living in McDonalds.:rotfl:NSK Zombie # SFD 7/15 Food Bank £0/£5

I make crab apple jelly from the tree in my garden, a really nice variation is to add either a pinch of chilli flakes or a whole chilli whilst it's bubbling.GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -

Something I discovered on the internet is that you can substitute egg with cornflour. One tablespoon of cornflour = one egg. I made some fish cakes and used cornflour mixed with water and made it up to be the consistency of beaten eggs and used it to coat and breadcrumb the fishcakes instead of egg. It actually worked better than egg as the fish cakes were crispier. I also managed to make a cake, it wasn't bad but not as good as egg in my opinion.
Good tip! I remember looking up egg substitutes for a poster here on the quick qs thread and found this article which mentions using banana or tofu (amongst others) to replace egg *although i can't vouch as not tried*A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

During the second world war pears were used in cakes aswell as apples when fat was so heavily rationed.

I am so proud of myself that I'm tekking everyone here...I boned a whole chicken! MrS sells larger value chooks so I bought one Thurs & did the bizz yesterday which I think helped. It was incredibly easy & not at all how I imagined so I'd advise anyone to have a go. The original cost was £1:99 per kilo--far, far cheaper than any cubed or boneless meat--& I'm still using the carcass to make a soup for today.Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

if you get a ladder in one leg of your tights don't throw it away, just cut off the laddered leg at the top. next time you ladder a pair of tights do the same thing. you then wear both pairs (a leg each) the added bonus is that the double waistband acts like control pants. a light spraying of hairspray often prevents ladders (and can help with static control)0
