I'd like to try this - so if I am making bolognaise, at what point do you add the lentils in? When it is bubbling, or before? And do you have to soak them or do anything to them first? Sorry to sound a bit dim....:o but this sounds a really good way to make it go even further!

A recipe I got from my mum uses the green lentils in a veggie shepherds type pie.

I typed it out recently for someone else, so I have pasted it in in case you would like it. I cook this fairly often, it freezes well too. Haven't costed it, but it must be pretty frugal

    Lesley

    Green lentil cottage pie.
2 lb potatoes, cooked and mashed with milk, butter/spread and ground black pepper
    Vegetable oil
    1 onion, chopped
    6oz green lentils (uncooked)
    1 clove garlic, crushed
    4 oz vegetarian cheese (cheddar)
    2 carrots, diced
    1 tablespoon tomato puree
    1 green pepper, diced
    4 oz mushrooms
    1 teaspoon dried basil
    Pinch cayenne pepper
    Seasoning
    Vegetarian stock cube

Cook lentils in plenty of water until just soft, drain, but save ½ pint of the cooking liquid.
Meanwhile, fry onion, garlic and carrot, adding the pepper and mushrooms towards the end.
Add the cooked lentils, tomato puree, basil, cayenne and seasoning. Add the reserved liquid and the stock cube.
Put this mixture into an oven proof dish, cover with the mashed potato and sprinkle with the grated cheese.

Bake in a moderately hot oven until the top is golden brown

Rose is one of my favourite cooks. I have the bean book, and although I use several of the recipes, I wish there were more pictures in it, although it is just a cheap paperback, there may have been pictures in the hardback.

I have her book Rose Elliot's Vegetarian Cookery (in hardback which may make a difference) which does have a few pictures, but not that many, but strangely I don't seem to mind for that book, and it's one of my favourites.

you would need to be discrete!but they do sell them so people must buy them(me included )I put the old one in a clear plastic bag inside a big handbag and it was not disgusting as I do try to keep them as clean as possible and had disinfected it before hand.

anyway glad to have made people laugh:j:j:j

just bought some make up from Clinique as it is their bonus time so get a goody bag of small size items good for putting in handbag/take on holiday.Usually don't want the make up bag as got loads already but this 1 was a big drawstring one lined with nylon that is perfect to put my wet swimsuit in after a trip to the pool or on a beach :)
