Do you grow and eat turnips, I know they feature in your thread, but I wasn't sure if they'd made it to your garden or plate;). I think theyre pretty cheap!!!

    Hi Tashja,

Well this one ends on monday, and I'm not going to do any off budget spending, so I was going to start on tuesday, 1st July.

But I will have food left over from this one, so I guess it depends which way you look at it!

I have never actually grown one, but will put it on my list of challenges, as i really do love the taste, especially if they are chipped and put in oven as an alternative to oven chips:o

I have begun to cost out meals, and with four hungry peeps at home need to do this.
so..last night i made chilli con carne,

    250g lean mince,(netto 2 for £3.50 500g each) 87.5p
    1/2 onion--5p
    peppers, (frozen) 30p
tin of value kidney beans 19p
    two tins of toms 36p
chilli seasoning 1p fresh herbs from garden 0p
jacket potato each from large bag 57kg for £6.50 reckon they were 2kg in total..11.5p per kilo, 22p for spuds.

    total for meal..for 4..£2.05

so nearly 50p each for the meal. I reckon i could get it down further

Pud was microwaved jam sponge and custard,
    jam...5p

    sr flour 100g..6p

    two eggs...25p

    marg...10p

milk.. for sponge and custard 2op?

    Custard powder 5p

    Total 71p

    total for the two £2.76

    each works out at 68p..

I reckon over the day may work at £1 per person, so that is twice your amount, still a large saving though. I will have to get my thinking cap on!:rotfl:

BOB, the chilli meal sounds very reasonable! :T :money:

Do your crew have meat every day? If so, how much meat counts as meat, if you see what I mean? Like would a pea annd rosemary risotto with little pieces of bacon itn it count? Cos mostly veggie meals (or smartprice sausages or frozen mince or offal) seem to be the only way I can get it that cheap while keeping meat in our diet.;)

Woul they eat liver and onion casserole? Devilled kidneys?

Mind you, I could sacrifice my posh coffee, and then I could afford more meat, so each to their own!:D

Since a vegetarian day in our house can be as little as 10p for our evening meal, we can have a couple of more pricy meat-eating days, with the lentils balancing it out!

Don't know if any of those things would work for you? Let me know what you think?! Oh and keep posting your addings up, i love knowing I'm not the only one doing a spot of geeky maths ;););) .

Shaz and mumma67, very interesting thoughts on the veg boxes, Seems good that yours has eggs too shaz, free range ones are worth a fair bit eh?

    Happy Friday all,

  • They would eat meat every day if i let them. but no we have a lot of veggie meals as well. I have quantities of quorn, also they like a lot of eggs and pasta dishes, as well as rice ones. I do a lot of meat free curries as well, and soups..i love butternut squash soup..very cheap at mo and large as well, must get some in.I also make a lot of my own bread..it soon goes though.
I have been thinking a lot about it all, and reckon we could eat better on less.
My budget varies between £150-250 a month and that depends on freezer cycle, as in replenishing it. I have never gotten the hang of batch cooking for the freezer as they will eat any quantity i make.
