I've just checked my parents house who are a band B - same as 14 other houses on the same side of the street whilst 11 are band A.

Should I appeal? they have a corner house which has a parking bay inside the garden which is the same size as a medium size car, should i appeal the valuation?

There-s no way the house qwas worth 40K in 1993, also a a retail park opened up a few years back inf that makes any effect.

    Hi all,

Ive just done a check and I live in a 2 bed ground floor flat and we are in band B. The upstairs neighbour (upstairs flat the same as ours) is band A and the house next door of which is a 3 bed detached property is band C. The house next door seems fair enough but im wondering why if we are on the ground floor we are B and the upstairs neighbour is A. Do you think I have grounds for appeal or is the reason were B and not A like our uptstairs neighbour because we are on the ground floor?

    Thanks
    Alex

Not quite on the subject of banding, but worth noting. While my son was at school I got a 25% single person discount. Once he left school and was over 18 that discount disappeared. I've only recently discovered, however, that since he is still on a very low wage, I qualify for 2nd Adult Discount. Not a huge amount, and you have to form-fill and submit evidence (such as a couple of recent wage slips) but every little helps. Contact your local council.

hello, I dont mean to put a downer on this thread as u all seem to be getting great results! But please do be aware that when you appeal the banding of your property you could end up shooting yourself in the foot as they may decide to put it up a band rather than lower if they think you are not paying enough! I work for a Council and this has happened!!!

I live in a small block of flats which are just over a year old yet it doesn't appear in my borough's listing but I'm charged at a band D. What to do? Mind you it took about a year for the address to show up on most business' database as the closest they could get to was No 55 and the newbuilds are 55a/b and c!

Hmm, is that true? I think its only likely if you appeal and you are surrounded by houses that have a higher rating. But if you are appealing with houses around you that have a higher rating then you need to ask yourself if its worth applying anyway - isnt it?

Please clarify this further - as this posting will put a lot of people off applying in the first place.

I thought you only had six months from the date you move into a property to appeal the council tax banding. Am I wrong in this?

  • Thanks for a great thread!!

After reading all the posts on here, I have only just realised that A is a low band. I always thought that was the highest you could go. Derrrrr!!!!

I'm only a young un though (if you can call 26 young), so thats my excuse.
  • Can your banding go up if they look at it again?
