VIRGIN broadband on windows 98

I gave my mum my old pc (windows 98) and it works no problem with Virgin cable modem! I am not a techie so don't know how - my hubbie set it up.

It will work

The only problem is the printer does not work and I can't buy a printer to work with 98. We can't get drivers for any old printers that we have!!

I've got 2 old Win 98se PCs here, both work on Virgin Cable with no problems.
Both were new installs, put on Opera and they connected straight away.

Have you actually tried opening your browser?

I've never activated anything with Virgin or used their software.
I was told that they cannot train everyone to cover all systems which is why the only recommend the newest OS's.

Connect using ethernet, check the card is working properly and enabled in Device Manager (via Control Panel/System).

I've used Virgin with an old laptop with a 233mhz processor and 64mb RAM, so keep trying.

it's the first time i'm trying to activate it. it seems to work as i got to the virgin activation page but it scanned my laptop and said my software was rubbish. i'm now trying to install xp but i haven't got a key. you lot are an amazing help

Not much point going down the XP route without a key, you'll turn a working 98 PC into a non working XP PC. Also, if the pc is old without much ram, it will run like a dog.

So what, I've connected to Virgin with some right old tat, some of my stuff has come literally from a skip and been connected straight to Virgin, no problem whatsoever.

I'm sure I've never had to "activate" anything, even when I first had it.

You don't need to activate anything. Just plug it in, fire up your browser of choice and try it.

I've got this nagging feeling that back in the days when 512Kb was the top cable speed I used 95 with Telewest.

A little over a year ago I was using windows 98 (not se) for ntl (now virgin media). That was broadband.

As has been suggested try just opening internet explorer and then try loading a website (yahoo for instance). It may well work.

Failing that double check there is no firewall blocking your connection.

trace_567 not that it really matters but I think the page you found is for ADSL broadband.

SOrry mate yes i did try but it wouldn't connect to anything apart from the virgin media activation webpage
