It a discount card
Have you read the whole thread? Someone said the card is free, you dont have to make a purchase. There are some minor freebie offers by having it.
It is not a discount card, however for some reason you have to have one for certain offers it would seem.
It is just a marketing tool for Matalan, or put another way, big brother is watching what you buy.0 -
There's seems to be a lot of confusion about why Matalan cards exist. I haven't been in recently, so I haven't seen the "you don't need one signs", which may be the result of a law change.
However...originally, you had to have a card as the card showed you were a member of the club...and only members of the club could shop there. (Simplified explanation). It's a bit like Makro, although Makro have more stringent entry rules to their club; for Matalan the entries rules are that you're breathing, you can write and you have money to spend!
There's a piece of law which allows wholesalers to operate differently from retailers (I think those are the right distinctions) but in order to qualify for them, the wholesalers have to restrict their clientel (sp) and must NOT sell to the general public. Matalan use their membership card system to take advantage of this. Selling to someone without a card would infringe those restrictions.
Perhaps they've been rumbled and/or the law has changed, hence the "you don't need one" signs.
I'm not a lawyer, so please don't take what I've said as any sort of legal statement. I'm sure I've got the spirit of it right though.
When I've forgotten my card, they've just issued a day ticket. No fuss, no argument.

Precisely you're getting nothing, but a plastic card which may entitle you to participate in a set offer if your willing to spend, therefore NOT FREE !
General shoppers DO NOT require a card to shop at Matalan.0 -
