Well hopefully, since the Nationwide website states :
"You can use any Nationwide Card Reader or a Card Reader from any other UK Bank or Building Society if you have access to one."

These 'high-tech' pieces of equipment apparently only cost about £2.50 each to make (whether that includes the cost of the 2 batteries, I don't know), so no doubt there will be a lot of them about soon.
Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.

Forgive me if I've missed something - but isn't there a glaring security risk with these?

So I did a quick 'offline' check with mine and it seemed to confirm when I had put in the correct pin. So isn't that a loophole for criminals to be able to use these to establish a pin? Alright, so it would take a while to go through 5000 PINs (on average), but they could use a machine - or their siblings to do it for them

I'm sure there's a security feature that I haven't been informed about yet . . . maybe the machine locks up after 3 incorrect goes?
    This too, shall pass.

my fear would be that surely it would be easy to automate the testing all the numbers to find the pin, and disable anything that locks it up after a number of failures.

I am very surprised to find that it can tell if the pin is right or wrong, offline,

    cheers G

Yes it does lock the card after 3 tries.

  • If you have a joint account do you get two separate card readers or just the one? My husband had one sent to him by Nationwide (only his name on the envelope) but I haven't received one yet.

we use these at work for accessing bank websites, they lock out after 3 attempts to enter the pin and some also do the same if you dont use them for a whilem so I hope this doesnt happen. We use quite a few different types of these things and the card readers are the easiest ones to use.

You usually get one each, we have joint account and my wife has hers but I dont.

I got one for our joint account, and the wife got one for her own (separate) account.

Wonder if I can sell one on fleabay.
