hi can anyone advise please - i cancelled my barclaycard on paying it off 2 years ago or so. received post releated to it shortly after rang them up they said sorry yes it's now cancelled. then a few months later the same thing happened. each time i asked them to write confirmation which they havent
i've now moved home and am having post redirected. this to my surprise has included 2 recent flyers from barclaycard one which ijncluded some sort of credit card "cheques"sent to my old address.
i am going to call them but is there someone independantly an ombudsman or something i can register my cancelleation with to ensure this is done ? thanks for any advice

check your credit report to see if its shown as cancelled there, if not write to them and ask again and threaten the ombudsman on them if they dont
re the flyers, i still get them from barclaycard even tho i closed the account in september last year, seems as if the promotional leaflets are still sent even tho the accounts closed, although havent had any in a few weeks0 -

The same thing happened to me. It seems Barclaycard are not always keen on closing Credit Card accounts when instructed.
I spoke to the overseas call centre on several occassions and they kept blaming the credit reference agencies saying that Barclaycard always supply correct information and on time.
In the end I contacted Experian and told them sort it out. They said they could only use the information supplied by the creditor and it seems Barlcaycard have not supplied that information, but they would sort it out. A month later, it was closed and showing correctly on my credit report.0 -
i've been on the phone to them all day they say they've cancelled it again but they won#'t send me an email to confirm it. i just don't trust them and i don't want to give them my new address . how do you complain to experian - does it cost anything ?0

I cancelled my Barclaycard yesterday and was told that I would recieve a letter to confirm this. Hopefully this won't drag on for too long.
Also, the guy I spoke to in the 'custumer retention' department was very keen to keep my business. He offered me 2% cash back for 6 months, which suprised me. I didn't know Barclaycard did cashback.

Hello, I'm new on here. I just thought that I'd share my current experiences with closing my Barclaycard Platinum account.'Forewarned is forearmed' as they say, and I found your website while googling for credit card closure procedures. I was disturbed to read from several posters that I would be in for the hard sell if I rang them to close, so 3 weeks ago I wrote them a formal letter ( I sent it to Customer Services 1234 Pavilion Ave. Northampton), requesting closure of the account. I enclosed some bits of my cut-up credit card (not the whole thing incase the post got into the wrong hands and someone decided to do a jigsaw puzzle with it:rolleyes:) and actually told them in the letter that there were lots of comments and complaints to be found on message boards about hard selling over the phone which was one reason why I was sending my request in writing.I requested a formal letter from them confirming closure.
In the meantime, thank you to everyone who has posted on this topic and given valuable advice!:T
Last Tuesday, fed-up with waiting for confirmation that they'd done this, and seeing that my account was still live and showing an available balance on the website, I sent a secured e-mail to them, asking what was going on, and if they'd read my letter. True enough, I got a standard e-mail reply; "We're sorry you're leaving Barclaycard" etc etc, plus a long list of things I'd be missing if I did give up my card. The e-mail told me to ring them to go through some identification to close the account. It didn't refer to my letter at all, in fact , I don't think that that the person replying had bothered to look into it, just sending me a standard reply. it was also full of typos and spelt my name wrongly. It would appear that I will have to ring them after all out of sheer frustration at not getting any useful acknowledgment that they've had my letter or this account might never get closed:mad: perhaps that's what they were hoping for?!!0 -
You could try 'customer relations' 08445560104. a UK office. I closed my card with a phone call to their 08009177277 Indian call centre and duly received confirmation by post but on an earlier problem about wrongly charged interest the 0800 number staff were worse than useless but the UK staff dealt with it promptly and correctly, even giving me a £20 credit for all my trouble.0

Thanks for that advice Sicker. I'm glad you got something out of complaining to them!
Well, I've just rung them. The first person I spoke to said that they hadn't received my letter! However, he said that he could close my account there and then. He asked me the reason for closure and I simply replied 'I've had enough-no discussion!' He couldn't say much to that really! He told me that he'd pass me on to the Closures Department, and I made it very clear that I wasn't to be subjected to any hard selling. The person I was put through to told me that they HAD received the letter (Honestly!Aren't they working from the same systems?),but that it didn't reach them until 9 days after I'd posted it. She said that my account would be closed 'in the next few days'. When I asked why it hadn't been closed immediately on receipt of the letter she said that the contents were logged and the letter was passed on; due to the high volume of post they get they can't deal with them all immediately. She also said that my account would still appear to be live online even though it was going through the closure process. And I thought I was a doing the right thing by writing in !!!!
Help! I've lost my emoticons!!!!0 -
Its okay to close credit cards accounts over the phone as long as you ask them to confirm it in writing and find out how long it will take for your credit file to be updated. I would make sure that you always take the name of the person that you spoke to on the phone.
I closed my vanquis and Aqua in this way and had no problems.
Hope this helps0 -
I've just found out someone used my card that was sent to my old address after my account was "closed", now I have to use a debt collection firm as a mediator.
When moving house I would recommend to everyone to tell their credit card companies their forwarding addresses even if the have closed the account in case of the account being reopened and to stop any post going to the old address.0
