cancelling barclaycard

A phone call to customer services should be all that's required to cancel a credit card, but ask Barclaycard to confirm closure to you in writing. Most lenders do not ask you to return their cards. You're simply requested to cut them up.
For peace of mind, it's advisable to check your credit reports to make sure the a/c is marked "settled". Unlike credit checks which appear on your credit file more or less in realtime, this type of data can take up to a month. The whole process (from the initial phone call to your lender) can sometimes span a couple of months, so allow plenty of time.I've now moved home and am having post redirected. This to my surprise has included 2 recent flyers from Barclaycard one which included some sort of credit card "cheques"sent to my old address. I am going to call them but is there an ombudsman or something i can register my cancellation with to ensure this is done?
If you feel you have grounds for complaint against B'card, I would request a copy of its complaints procedure (you can do this over the phone). This sets out the time limits allowed for dealing with your complaint. The bank is also obliged to confirm the result of your complaint in writing.
You have the right to take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman, if you are not satisfied with the outcomePeople who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -
I tried to close my account in October (it was for holiday inn points and that's all I wanted). They failed to do it then but I believe they DID do it in January when I called themn a second time.
I reason I believe they did do it is that when I log on I get a message to say they cannot show me details but call them to discuss my account (it does not say my login details are unrecognised).
It's now been 3.5 months.
How long should I wait before I chase them about updating my credit reports.
I would have thought 3 months was enough.0 -

I would have thought 3 months was more than reasonable.

Also, the guy I spoke to in the 'custumer retention' department was very keen to keep my business. He offered me 2% cash back for 6 months, which suprised me. I didn't know Barclaycard did cashback.

I got offered this as well when trying to cancel my old Morgan Stanley card which already had 1% cashback. I took them up on their offer as a backup for my Amex cashback card. The front of the card is Barclaycard Cashback but there is no sign of this card on their website - well wasn't when I looked last week anyway.0 -
I got 12 month 0% bt with 1.25% fee deal when I tried to cancel my barclaycard so if you want a deal it's worth hagglingNothing to see here, move along.0

I have phoned and they have told me to wait 6 months.
It took them 9 months before adding the account onto my credit report.
It's not really acceptable but there doesn't seem much point making a complaint until the 6 month point.
It's not really affecting me as I don't need credit right now, but it would put me off using Barclaycard in the future.
I only used them to get 20,000 priority points, which has actually worked out quite well as I've booked an expensive hotel on Times Square, New York.
So I guess it was worthwhile.0 -
Yes, i know loads of people that have had similar probs with Barclaycard while trying to close their accounts. It appears they suddenly value our custom when you tell them you wish to leave.
Though the issue of sending credit card chqs to addresses of former account customers is quite worrying and ought to be taken up seriously0 -
DAK if I have any legal right wrt them updating my credit report.
Is there a legal obligation on them to update it within a certian time frame?0
