Scottish Accent

  • No. No. Don't criticize other people's accents. All of them have their advantages and drawbacks. In Scottish for example the words suit and soot are indistinguishable. Many accents have their origin in the original language spoken in the region. In West Lothian they spoke a language similar to Welsh. That is why the language is so pure. Also, pronunciations change over the centuries. To take a well known example: Guy Fawkes. He almost certainly pronounced his name Gwee. And that's why he could go around calling himself Guido. If you listen to the accents of the Beatles - I am told that no one talks like that in Liverpool anymore.
Anyway, everybody in Scotland thinks I'm an Englishman.

I also hate listening to people from certain areas of Scotland, they sound dead rough.

Do any other Scottish folk feel the same?
no way no how, im darn proud that as soon as i open my mouth people know im scottish. Ive lived in englad nearly 23 yrs but not lost my accent , toned it down a wee bit for the benefit of the locals but will never lose it.. yes some accents can get on your nerves but its nice for people to know as soon as you open your mouth were your from.
Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
Our thoughts are ever with you,Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly,
    Are thinking of you today.
  • I am originally from West Lothian. There is no purer speech in the entire UK.

    i'm confused.

i now work and live in west lothian and there's nothing particularly pure about the local's speech!

Then you don't work and live in Fauldhouse.

  • Any Scottish accent that I have ever heard is lovely.

Just be glad that you don't come from Northern Ireland.........I hate my accent!

Pink .... How could you? I love our accent. I love our sense of humour. There are many reasons someone would want to leave N.I., but I would miss the accent and the quickfire jokes that nobody else seems to understand.

Some years ago my DD spent a post-degree year in Australia she just loved hearing all the accents again when she arrived back at Aldergrove. :D

You obviously don't like Fauldhouse. You must have gone there once and they chased you out - probably for impurities in your speech.
They are really nice people. After they have beaten you up, and you have swelling round your eye, one of them will produce a penknife, make a slit and suck the swelling out for you.

A shetlander on MSE - I love SHetland - been there the last two years on holiday, did you get any Boots offers up there?
Hi amanda40 - I wouldn't class myself as a Shetlander although I've been here 25 years. :) To be Shetland, you'd have to have been born and brought up here, probably with one or both parents who are Shetland. I'd still say I was Dundonian although I've now lived in Shetland longer than I lived in Dundee. <went to the same school as George Galloway - he of Celebrity Big Brother 'fame' ;)>

Great that you've been here on holiday! :) It's quite a long way to get here as you'll know - either a 12hr overnight ferry crossing or a 1hr flight from Aberdeen - but then we are as close to Bergen as we are to Aberdeen. It's a special place with special people and I hope you were made very welcome and I hope you come back! :)

Boots offers - pah! ;) I once sent an email to Boots mentioning the fact that the machines with offers are only in bigger shops and that our nearest machine is a 12hr ferry crossing away. I referred to their card as a "Disadvantage Card". <g> However, I do get sent double points vouchers in the post but I don't know if everyone gets those or if it's because we don't have access to machines. I can't complain though, at least we now have a small Boots. When I came to Shetland, we only had local chemists and toiletries seemed so much more expensive here. We only had one supermarket <and I have a 70 mile round trip to get there> which didn't stock much in the way of toiletries. Boots eventually got into Shetland a few years ago <previously the local council tried to keep national chains out> and we now have 2 supermarkets! <woo!> The supermarkets stock more in the way of toiletries now and what with a wee Boots, well, we're spoiled for choice! ;) In the hamlet where I live, we have one shop/PO, so we are very lucky!

So apart from the Co-op, Somerfield and Boots, the only other outside shop is really McKays which just opened in the last couple of years. At least it keeps our 'High St' a bit more unique than the clones you see in every town and city now. :)

A Dundonian by birth on MSE! Here's another one!!
But do you still live there?! ;) Would you believe it? I now live many many miles from Dundee, in a wee rural hamlet in the Shetland Isles. And guess who now writes Oor Wullie and the Broons? <who of course are products of Bonnie Dundee ;)> None other than my next door neighbour.. If you saw the TV programme about the Broons anniversary, you would have seen him being interviewed and you would have seen my house in the background!

    Nope.

I love the Scottish accent - okay some areas sound a bit dodgy, admittedly.

I have an Edinburgh accent, and every time I am in England I get complimented on it.

You should speak it properly, and be proud to sound like a Scot. :T
