help - hard bed in rented house causing back probs

hi again,

Well I have moved ... into a different house and things are going well with regard to new housemates etc.

However, I am having one problem ... the bed - its rock hard and this week I have been in a lot of pain getting up in the morning as I am so stiff. It carries on all day and when Im sat (like now) the bottom of my back is aching like mad!! Im struggling to work on my degree stuff for more than a couple of hours and no amount of stretching seems to help ....

I know its not money saving but I really couldnt think where else to put this as this house is rented and the bed was provided with the room - its brand new and from IKEA so its supposed to be quality stuff.

Really hoping someone can advise .....

Jen

    Hi,

I have mattress toppers on my beds. the spareone is a really cheap bed with an Ikea mattress pad on it ... everyone says its really comfortable.

My bed which is a better one but too hard for me has a john Lewis mattress topper on and is lovely and soft with it.

Another alternative would be to put a duvet under the sheet to make it softer.

Get a mattress topper - you can buy the foam egg crate ones quite cheaply and they do work wonders on rubbish beds. IKEA mattresses are ok (I have one) but they are a bit hard, I think they're designed to be used with some kind of topper as they do recommend that you buy one in all of their bed 'packages'. You can't really expect the LL to change the bed, and IMO it's not worth the hassle, just get the topper :)

Just a note......quite often adults will get back ache when they change beds for the first couple of weeks. Perhaps you could wait a week before you spend any money because you might find it settles down.

    maybe

Was also thinking that maybe if I just ask the LL for the duvet he wanted provide with the bed but I said No cos I have my own from home... and then just put it over the mattress... is that likely to have the same effect?

I doubt that it'll be thick enough to make a real difference, but you could try it as a temporary measure before you buy a topper. As LittleTiker says, it could just be the change of beds.

If you decide you want a topper, IKEA deliver now to *most* areas, or you could try ebay. If you live near a Dunelm Mill or Rosebys, they night be worth a try too (I think you can get student discount at Dunelm, not sure though).
  • People with IKEA beds aren't supposed to sleep on them.....they are just for show. You're supposed to be up partying all night and then collapse in a drunken stupor. When you wake the following morning you should be in someone elses comfortable bed.....

If not then you're doing it all wrong.
