They didn't take the £150 by debit card. They took it by direct debit.
With almost all credit cards (not quite all), they will DEFINITELY ABSOLUTELY take the direct debit as stated on the statement, irrespective of any payments made between the statement date and the DD date.
That's just how it works. It's not MBNA's error - it's your error in misunderstanding what was going to happen.
What happens is that the direct debit run is created at the same time the statements are produced, but then it is actually submitted to BACS on the due date. Nothing that happens in between affects the amount collected by DD.
That said, they should return the money when YOUR error becomes clear.0 -
If there is any misunderstanding it's from you, I think. Firstly, who mentioned Direct debits ? We don't pay by Direct Debit. Secondly, the payment of £150 was taken contrary to my wife's directions to MBNA. As they were unable to take the FULL amount, she opted to pay by other means, which she did immediately. Then they took £150 (the maximum they could take) from her debit card, regardless of her wishes, which meant that she had OVER-PAID by that amount. Where is OUR error, which is about to become clear.Peter0

The OP made a mistake when using her CC, was stung according to the T&C signed and must now learn from that experience. CC companies are out there to make money from us and if we breach the T&C they are more than happy to screw us for the charges.
The first thing you should have done is rang MBNA and asked, politely, for a refund of the charge because it was a small error, you are a model customer and have always made a payment. Coming onto a forum to shout about it does not really help anyone but yourself.
This should be a place for support and advice and ogling at piccies of Martin. Not for !!!!!ing about people's handling of credit. When I see posters say "well obviously you can't handle credit well if you go over the limit" is really does irk me. People in glass houses and all that jazz.........
We are human and we all make mistakes. The best thing we can do is learn from them so they never happen again and so the banks and CC companies find it harder and harder to screw us.
Here ends the sermon.
