Because they animal test, not just usual taste testing but vivisection
As MrsE says, they are no doubt not the only ones, anything made by the big name companies will have been animal tested to some degree or other which is why so many of us advocate foods such as Arden Grange, Burns and Nature Diet which are all just taste tested.
But If Iams was the only food my dog would eat then of course I would feed it. Same as I quite happily take medication thats been animal tested if I need it for my own health. Just when I can I try to be as ethical as possible about what I buy:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -

Gotta be worth trying that Wagg AM, thats another endorsement.
To be honest, I think there are a few foods (especially working dog foods) around that are decent quality for the money (by decent quality I specifically mean reasonably natural ingredients and not full of additives like bakers!), such as Dr Johns, Wafcol etc etc, however, Wagg is handy for me as it is available in quite a few supermarkets and pet shops, and as dogs do better on the same food rather than chopping and changing, this is more practical for me. Personally I really dislike feeding canned food as it is smelly and not good for dogs teeth.
Not all dogs are keen on dry complete food straight away, whichever you choose, so if you decide to go for a dry food you may want to soak it in some warm water first, or add a little gravy or leftover food scraps at first to make it more interesting. You also ideally need to change foods gradually, as sudden changes can upset the dogs tummy.
Good luck whatever you go with!0 -
Our big girl has been a fussy eater since being tiny, everyone has suggested Royal canin, she hates it ,my cats love it, but the only tummy and doggy friendly food I have tried is Pro plan, im surprised no one else has mentioned it! It has produced excellent results for us and the puppy loves it, its a similar price to Canin/iams/Burns, but I find it agrees with her and she really does a look fantastic, her coat glistens and she doesnt smell,if you know what I mean!!
We find alot of the show fraternity and top breeders feed it, it has a high meat or fish content, and no waste.0 -
My 3 are on Autarky summer......really suits them!
About £17 - £18.50 for 15 kgs but can be difficult to find. I buy it on ebay or a local pet shop will usually order it in for you.
The JRT's get 50g a day as they are quite chubby
The rottie gets 350g - 400g a day in 2 meals so a bag lasts about a month.0 -

I am really shocked about what I have been reading regarding Iams
I have two springers (age 3 and 1) and the older one has a really sensitive tummy. She just would not put on weight and was so skinny - we changed her food to Burns on recommendation of the vet but still no weight gain, then we tried Iams and she has thrived on it (if anything she is a porker now!). I no longer want to buy it due to what I have read here, but don't really have much choice as it is the one brand she seems to do well on:(
My younger springer, however, is going to have her brand changed ASAP. I may give Pro Plan (as mentioned above) a try for her - trying the older one on it to see how she does.0
