I feed both mine wagg and they are thriving.0

Another vote for Wagg here. I tried my little Jack-Russell type mutt on all sorts of expensive food when we first got him. He much prefers Wagg to any of them - and saves us a fortune. Along with hoovering up small amounts of our food scraps, he loves his Wagg and is fit and healthy. I guess it just depends on the individual dog as to which food they prefer.:D0

I've got a 10+ year old (dogs home) staffy cross. I started him on Wagg dry food cos it was pretty cheap and it made his farts smell worse than mine so i've not fed it him since (i don't like competition).
Now he eats anything Chappie, Pedigree Chum, Butchers Choice, Sainsburys own (does like Asda's SuperChunks), Hero, kebabs, pizza and i've even come down stairs to find he's ripped a bin bag open and licked a curry carton clean. He loves lager if you spill some and still acts like an over grown puppy.
One thing you do need to remember is that if you feed them treats (chew sticks) don't feed them too many of the green ones from Aldi as it turns their poo bright green. Shocked the crap out of me till i realised what it'd be.0 -
I wonder if anyone can help please?
I have an old dog (at least 12 -13 years...not sure as rescued her and uncertain of age) I have had her about 10 years and tried lots of food but she finally settled on asda's (MSE dog!)
Anyhoo, I have been giving her supplements as her coat is not in top condition and I have found that the supplements have made all the difference so I wonder if its time to try a different food? She has arthritis too and I understand there are foods available with glucosamine and chondroitin. Does anyone have any advice for me re cheapest/best food? I hesitate to ask the vet as they have always tried to sell me the food in the surgery and it seems quite pricey. I am quite happy to pay for it of course but i just wondered which one to go for, there seems to be so many. btw, I tend to mix her dry food with whatever it is we have had for tea so she gets a good mix of nutrients.

Hello there.
You are describing my dog to a tee!! She is well over 14 years old, again,a rescue dog so not exactly sure. For the last three years she has been on glucosamine with the added ingredients, lately I have given her the ones from the Pet range of Healthy Direct. They have a range of supplements for dogs, with vitamins, stuff for shiny coats etc.Mine is also on powders for ageing as she gets very confused ,it is a bit like alzheimers in humans.
For the last 2 years she has been on Rimadyl, the anti steroidal painkillers for arthritis, prescribed by the vet but i get them from the internet as they are a good bit cheaper. Her legs are really bad,she has lost nearly all her muscles on them and without the pills would be in a bad way.
The biggest worry is her food.Up to 2 years ago she had a good appetite and would eat a dry all in one food.Gradually to give her variation i gave her tinned food as well, but now she is very picky and she eats little and often, sometimes 4 or 5 times a day.I have to give her mainly tinned meat to get all the pills and potions down, quite a struggle at times.I just buy the best quality food i can, pedigree,or similar but also buy liver and chicken ,oh and she loves pilchards and tuna too!!
The specialised all in one dry food can be expensive,i wouldn't go down that route unless she has a medical problem that requires it.If the arthritis gets bad, like mine, the vet will prescribe for the pain as i am not sure any food would help with that condition.
If i can be of further help,please ask.0 -
thanks Froglet, I forgot to mention she is on rimadyl and like your dog, enjoys the odd tin of sardines!
I'll look into the healthy direct supplements so thank you for the suggestionSave £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000

One of my dogs has just turned 8 and has just been diagnosed with mild arthritis. He's on Metacam and has Glucosomine & Chrond. tablets every day. We also made the decision to put him on a high quality dog food and went for John Burns. It's more expensive but what he's getting is 100% natural and I believe far more advantageous for him in the long run.
The foods which claim to have the G&C added will be in small quantities so it would be best to source the tablets on the internet. I buy mine from zipvit.co.uk - the high strength ones. You could also add a devils claw tablet and CLO to help.0 -
Can anyone tell me if I can feed my dog raw liver or kidneys? I believe I can give him raw bones.0

im not a Pedigree foods fan but my dog requires a glucosamine suppliment and wont take the tablets (even crushed up in her food) so i feed her the Pedigree Joint Care Plus Max Strength dog treats and they have Glucosamine and Omega 3 among other ingredients and i have seen a real improvement in her movement
(sorry i know it doesnt really answer ur question, burns is a good food for dry also Nature Diet or Natures Menu if you want to feed wet are good hollistic food but dont have any suppliments) Democracy is a process by which the people are free to choose the man who will get the blame.:j0 -
Thanks guys, I have looked into all the suggestions and decided to maybe change her food (still haven't decided which one yet), give her a doggy multivitamin, a cod liver oil tablet and some glucosamine and chondroitin tablets. I have looked at all the websites and priced up, the best place is my local pharmacy which does human glucos/chond tabs for £2.99 for 30 and glucosamine tabs at 99p for 30 which I think is a very good price. I can't understand why human tablets cost more than the doggy equivalent. I shall look carefully at the doses though before I give her them.
I'll also carry on with the rimadyl as it works well and stops her from limping.
