Sat nav designed for car AND foot?

I don't think I was dreaming... at the weekend I thought I heard an ad for a gadget that you could use in the car and on walks... I vaguely recall it might have been a Garmin. Have had a look at a few garmins and I'm a bit baffled by the choices.

Has anyone got any knowledge of models (any make) that do both these things, or could make a recommendation? I'm in need of a suitably macho birthday present but we hardly do any driving, so I could only justify the purchase if it did walking navigation as well!

TomTom (or the version I have - it's over a year old) does have 'walking' as an option for deciding which route to select (Fastest, Shortest and Speed Limited being others.)

Memory-Map Road Angel Adventurer 7000. Expensive, but does the job. My advice would be to get separate units. A good GPS for the car and a dedicated walking one. All you need for walking is a grid reference. Use a map and compass after that. Far more accurate than the GPS screen.

at least if you're walking you'll actually be able to get down half the routes they tell you to take.

I maintain that a map and compass are the best way to navigate on foot, with a GPS in reserve to give you a grid reference when you need it. A keen hiker I am, and have never needed a GPS, and indeed, I do not posses a hiking one, although I can see the benefits of using one.

TomTom has a 'walk' option but it means walk on known roads; you may need something like memory-map which uses OS topographical maps.

If you have a nokia N73 phone then download Tom Tom on to it from a friend buy a GPS bluetooth receiver off ebay for about £20 and you have a satnav for free no subsriptions to pay for.

This only works on symbian phones.
