Or because the machines are cheaper to make :D

I know they are more efficent just wondered how it was cheaper to heat water from cold using electricty than using it from our hot water tank heated by OFCH?

Could well be because they're cheaper to make :p
But as long as they have A energy efficiency rating, I ain't too bothered.
I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break :D

I know some people are not keen on Hoover, but I bought a Hoover Optima HNF7128 over a year ago, I use it twice a week and it's never given me any trouble at all. All my clothes come out very clean, even when I've put my mud-caked gardening clothes in.

It has all the functions I need; 8kg drum, 1200 spin speed, wool wash and delicates cycles, start delay, time indicator so you can tell when it's going to finish its cycle, easy-to-use wash cycle programes, automatic half-load detection. I got mine for £160 from the Comet clearance website (it has a couple of cosmetic scratches on it, but that's not a problem for me!)

    For more info on it:

Here are all the models with a 5 year guarantee. Siemens have 2 year as standard anyway but this promotion seems ongoing too.

If your budget will stretch to it, get a Meile.

Mine won't, and because I live on my own I can barely justify it. I've just opted for a Bosch. http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@2069864069.1206895908@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdhadedjiehgfjcflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=undefined&sm=undefined&tm=undefined&sku=909381&category_oid=-28877

I believe it comes with a two year guarantee, and by using code AW10, you get a further 10% along with the 3% cashback from Quidco. All round it is a highly rated machine.

I chuckle when people recommend a brand based on the fact that there washer has lasted them 10years etc. It is common belief that most of the manufacturers have dumbed down there machines throughout the years to ensure that there is a higher turnaround of machines. As there has been little innovation in the white goods market, having appliances last forever does not favour the manufacturer at all. People tended to keep hold of what they had as there was nothing new and what they had worked.

Cheaper machines also allow them to sell more spare parts, which cost a fortune in comparison to the actual machine. All in all its about generating revenue for the manufacturers, and ensuring ongoing business through turnaround of machines. This keeps the retailers happy too.

There is a very interesting article on the UKWhitegoods forum about this Appliance Scandal, worth a read, but I think you may need to register.

Even when buying a Bosch, do not be fooled that it has been manufactured in Germany. The high end units still are, however the entry level models are not. (I believe Spain) hence the the "Made in Europe" label as oppose to "Made in Germany"

Brands to avoid in my opinion are Indest / Hotpoint and Candy / Hoover.

Also don't be taken in by gimmicks on machines. very few have any evidence that they work. (I think I have read this somewhere) that the laws of physics dictate that an 800rpm spin is the optimal for rinsing clothes, beyond this the additional spin offers less value, on this count a 1200rpm machine should be adequate for most.

btw all modern machines are cold fill now for energy efficiency.

Read, cheaper to make, I just don't believe that they are more energy efficient.

Also cold fill only has been the norm throughout Europe for some time, so standard manufacturing costs are involved.

Its not cheaper to use. I read it on Which, it costs more for your washing machine to heat up the water especially on washes hotter than 40 than it does to heat up water in the boiler. Plus they take upto an hour longer to do a wash how can that be energy efficient? Which also said that manufacturers energy efficiency ratings were often wrong!

I don't agree with this bit (however I do agree with the rest). Having recently used a washer with a 1600 spin the clothes came out virtually dry, much dryer than my 1400 spin washer. Perhaps for rinsing the 800 is enough, but for removing water and therefore reducing drying time I would definately get the fastest spinning one I could afford. Since I've just forked out for my AEG 1400 spin washer this won't be for some time.

Back to the OP, my washer is on every single night, I've only had it 6 months but it is a million times better than my hoover one which broke down 5 times in 5 years (thank goodness for the extended warranty). I would recommend AEG.
