nicki, I also find letting spiders go the hardest part of catching them! We got one of these last year http://www.spidercatcher.net/index.html and we wouldn't be without it now! I'm thinking of getting a second one to keep upstairs.

bluemoon - thanks for the link but just looking at the advert made my skin crawl  I only have to catch spiders when OH is out a work as he'll do it the rest of the time thankfully, although he catches them with his hands :eek: He even caught a cranefly last night with his hands so he could get it out the house *insert puking smilie* I shudder just thinking about it yet I'm able to cope with dead mice and snails and slugs

I've not seen more than the usual number for this time of year, which admittedly is a lot. :) Even the news article I found didn't say anything much...

That girl got her picture in the paper/on the web for being scared of a few flying lanky spiders! Really takes the pee. Suppose that makes her a z-list celebrity, really!

Help ! It appears we have mice . Now this is not entirely surprising as we live in the middle of a field !! - It seems the problem is that our house is vented (vented bricks or something) and this is how they get in. They can't get everywhere just under the kitchen units and in a couple of the kitchen cupboards (they like sweet potatoes apparently !!!!!!!!)- I was wondering if anyone knows of a safe, cheap way to get rid or preferably deter them from coming in at all.

    Thanks in advance

You could try Hugh F-W's technique of holding a seance and asking them nicely to relocate to somewhere nice and warm and safe but away from the house!! Funny thing was he swore it worked!!

    Hello Lulubells

    Welcome to the MSE site.

I have a few suggestions for you:

If you don't have a cat, borrow one for a few days. The cat will see off the mice.........even if the cat isn't a mouser, it's smell will deter the mice from coming near your home.

Attach wire mesh to cover your air bricks, the air can still circulate but the mice won't have easy access.

Put all food stuff into plastic storage boxes or move the food to mouse proof areas.

Don't pay for a private pest control service to lay poison down, contact your local council which will be cheaper.

    or

Build a windmill in your garden, provide wooden clogs and watch them go clip clippity clop on the stairs.:D

Do NOT use rodent poison because they will die inside and create a terrible stink. Use a good "break-back" trap baited with chocolate or something sweet (it is a myth that mice like cheese).

In the long term a cat is a great deterent especially in rural areas. Even the smell of a cat about the place is often enough to deter rodents.

Good luck and hope you get rid of them soon.
