  • Apparently the ministry of defence use the ultrasonic/electromagnetic devices, and based on my own experience I find it very hard to believe they are a scam - I was a sceptic, but when our flat was heavily infested (they would run across the floor whilst we were watching tv!!) - we plugged the device in, cue lots of mouse activity and noise during first evening, then after a week, no more mice...

Recently there was a rat in my gran's house, plugged device in, 2 days later no new signs of rat...

I guess the pest control industry stands to lose a lot of trade and money though, as these devices are cheap and a one off investment - so I am not surprised there is 'evidence' saying they don't work.... call me a cynic if you like.
  • Thank you so much everyone for all your good advice, especially Paberley! I think I will block up holes, buy mesh covers for air bricks etc (we do live in an Edwardian house so have big holes), and look into buying some poison from Wilkos.

I have got virtually all food in plastic containers now and will be assiduous about sweeping the floor. We'll put the poison behind the fridge, in the fireplace, and behind the dishwasher, tumbler and washing machine as they will be warm places. I've put washing down all the worktops and table every morning before brekker, which is a bit of a pain, but necessary at the moment!

Have you ever seen that kids film called 'Mousetrap'? I'll try not to demolish the house whilst trying to catch the mouse like they did! :rotfl:

Before reading this i was tempted to buy one but tried poison instead - this worked fine by itself and the traps i set still have chocolate in them waiting to be eaten ! Ive left them out just in case we get visitors again
Peanut butter is apparently the best stuff for traps. We had two mice and caught them both with it, no further probs.
  • By the way. I've got most food in plastic storage containers now, but I've got a massive family sized pack of potatoes in the cupboard which I'm worried about the mouse nibbling.

If I put the potatoes in a plastic container won't they sweat and go mouldy? How do I protect my potatoes from the mouse? (they won't fit in the fridge, it's too big a sack!)

  • Nobody got any ideas about this? It's got me stumped.

How can I save my potatoes from the mouse? (Unless I wrap them in tin foil!)

Im another advocate of the "little nipper" traps from experiance and after much trial and research.. a little chunk of mars bar!! lol They just cant seem to resist it!

Although the "consequences" of the traps are not always nice!! I cant deal with them so have to call my parents who live 5 mins drive away to come and "dispose" of any bodies.... :o lol

The mousetrap made by Rentokil has a little lever so you don't have to actually touch the dead mouse. Just pick up the whole trap, hold it over the bin and press the lever and the little ex-rodent drops in. It's a very fast spring too, so the mouse doesn't suffer.

I read a report from a university in USA where they had tried controlled experiments with rats and mice using these sonic devices to see if they were any deterrent to stop them rodents going into a room . They creatures were released and one room had the deterrent and the other did not -everything else was the same . The rodents went freely from room to room. The stats showed no significant difference in the use of the devices. The conclusion was that they didnt work.

    Wish I'd read that first!

Every time we go away on holiday, it seems the mice move in - we cam back last Sat and have caught a mouse every night since then. So I bought the JML deterrant thingy and the mice are dancing a wee jig to it! It's going back to the shop!
Just call me Nodwah the thread killer
