We discovered we had mice just after we moved into our house .Little field mice so the humane traps didnt work as they were so tiny and could escape easily.Poison bait was no good either as it was supposed to let them crawl away and die outside but they never got very far and I had to clean up little mouse carcasses from under the kitchen units:o.The only way we found worked was the old fashioned spring traps, plenty of them and good strong springs so they are killed as quickly as possible.First lot we got OH just got the cheapest job lot and it wasn,t nice to discover half dead twitching mice the next morning which you had to finish off.So strong sprung traps please.
Best bait is definately peanut butter. The cartoons have got it wrong, mice dont appear to like cheese much:D.
Another thing OH did, as I didnt like the cute little vermin being killed, was to put open wide paper bags on the kitchen floor with peanut butter in the corner while we were within earshot,e.g sitting watching tv in the next room, when we heard a rustle we would sneak up and snatch the bag closed. He would then release them miles away.
We did leave the nasty metal traps down at night though and we have not had a problem for years now.I have seen some mice in the garden so I am sure we have some living in one of the outhouses but none inside for years at least, and thats where it matters as far as I am concerned.
You have to be carefull with cables etc if you have mice in the garden too as they chew through bloomin everything so check your lawnmover each time you use it.
Plant katnip to encourage the neighbours cats into the garden(not that they need encouraging really) and hopefully they will get some of them too.

yes we have spring traps all round where they come in every night (baited with chocolate) as well as poison but i thought I'd try the sonic deterrant thing to stop them coming in in the first place - no good!

    Hi,

    Urgent Help please!!

I noticed some mice droppings in one of the kitchen cupboards yesterday. so after reading on OS Board, I had covered the hole with thick foil and stored all the stuff in a big plastic box. But the mouse have cut through the foil and have also tried to cut through the plastic box

So I need to find another way to get rid of them

I have seen the following on Argos and B&Q stores. but before I send DH to buy them, just wanted to check if anyone here has any experience of them

    http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001501&langId=-1&searchTerms=BEACON+ADVANCED-DUAL+ACTION+MOUSE+AND+RAT+REPELLER&Submit=GO+%3E

The stores close at 6 pm today and I can't survive another day with mice in my house...

Please, this is urgent. I am scared to death...

We found a mouse swimming in our toilet! The landlord bought some plug in deterrents and we've seen no sign since so I would recommend that. Ours are just ultra-sonic so don't go through walls, you have to have one in each room. I would question how the Argos one goes through walls so that you only need one per floor-but if they're in your kitchen then that won't be a problem so long as you plug it in there.

As added protection, could you possibly keep food in cupboards higher up? And, be super clean so that there's not a crumb left lying around-they'll soon move on if there's nothing to eat.

    Thanks for replying Katzen,

I have only left Cans and Glass Bottles etc. at the lower levels now. So hopefully they won't find anything to eat... I have also asked DH to get some wirewool to cover the holes for the pipes in the cupboards

No Moneyqueen, I hate to tell you this, but please wash or bin the cans or bottles if they've been there for a few days. Mouse wee is very bad for health.

Among the diseases mice or their parasites may transmit to humans are salmonellosis (food poisoning), rickett-sialpox, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis. Mice may also carry leptospirosis, ratbite fever, tapeworms, and organisms that can cause ringworm (a fungal skin disease) in humans.

Sorry, I hope you get yopur problem sorted out, all the best xxx
