I bought some numbered 400... in June last year and my most recent purchase in April was 452...
That suggests the three-digit numbers are currently being used up at a rate of about 60 per year, so we will roll over to four digits some time around 2030.
In fact if 442 was sold in April and so were my 452 numbered bonds, the rate of sale must be rising even more rapidly, to get through 10 number blocks in a single month.0 -
The limit to the number of bonds an individual can own has increased over the years, it started off at £10k per person in 1957, and has risen to £50k now so that obviously speeds up the rate of bond number allocations significantly.

The total prize pool in March was £86,905,650 (increase of £1,800,100 or 2.12% on February)
The total prize pool in April was £88,215,800 (increase of £1,310,150 or 1.51%)
The total prize pool in May was £89,792,075 (increase of £1,576,275 or 1.79%)
So assuming the prize pool in a given month is 1%/12 = 0.0833% of the total value of bonds that suggests the number of eligible bonds increased from about 105,860,000,000 in April to 107,750,000,000, a rise of £1.89 billion in a single month.
