If you divide 22 by 7 (pi) and write the answer as a decimal you get 3.1428571425.... with seemingly no pattern repeat (I remember the Pie maths magazine in the 1960s reproduced this sequence over the bottoms of pages for years with still no repeat) and generators like this can be very close to producing random numbers.

I wonder whether ERNIE's numbers are truly random or are produced by an algorithm.

The original ERNIE random number generator didn't generate the numbers purely algorithmically but from a physical phenomenum (noise in a Neon discharge?). I guess that this is still so.

The trouble is that, as I wrote previously, the rest of Ernie may inject non-randomness into the process of selecting bonds.

    Could do better, tm.

pi is NOT 22/7, but 22/7 DOES repeat on a six-digit basis - as would have been more obvious if you hadn't left out the 8 between the later 2 and 5 :(

They are definitely NOT produced by an algorithm. In the 70's they measured the noise produced by a pair of back to back zener diodes. I seem to remember reading and article saying that they use a slightly different technique nowadays but they're still measuring noise rather than using an algorithm.
