I have to report that at last we have managed to get a prize greater than £25. I was beginning to think that the only prize really available was £25 as that was the only one reported here. Alright! it's a prize of only £50 that's come to my wife this month but at least we now know that they exist.Oh! and I won another £25 as well.

Hi everyone
We're thinking of putting the proceeds from downsizing our house into premium bonds. I think from June we could each put in £50,000 which just about takes care of the money we'll have left. I know there's no guaranteed return but with interest rates so low we are thinking we don't have much to lose. BUT, I think I read somewhere that if you die the premium bonds die with you - ie you can't leave them in a will or to your spouse. Is that right, does anyone know? Because if it is surely that's like throwing £50k away when one or other of us dies. If anyone can clarify this I'd be very grateful. Thanks. As a fan of THE NUMBER THREAD, our NUMBER IS £22,000 a year = FREEDOM
Amended 2019 - new NUMBER is approx £27k pa nett (touch wood)
Amended 2021 - new NUMBER is approx £29k pa nett - heading that way...fingers crossed!0 -
Not sure where you heard that, but no, that's not correct. If you die the Premium Bonds form part of your estate and then distributed as per your Will.

Thanks Badger. That's brilliant and explains it. I think read only the bit about being held for 12 months, not the rest which says the bonds can be repaid:
Premium Bonds
[FONT=Frutiger LT Pro 45 Light,Frutiger LT Pro 45 Light][FONT=Frutiger LT Pro 45 Light,Frutiger LT Pro 45 Light]If the NS&I savings you are claiming include Premium Bonds, you can continue the holding in the deceased’s name. Bonds will remain in each prize draw for up to 12 months after the date of the customer’s death.
To keep the Bonds invested, you’ll need to send the Bonds to us along with the completed claim form. Bonds can’t be transferred into another person’s name but will be kept on record for 12 months and prizes will be sent to the person who is entitled to the money. If the Bonds can’t be found at the time of the claim but are found at a later date, you’ll need to destroy them.
At the end of 12 months, the value of the Bonds will be paid out to the person who is entitled to the money. You can apply for repayment at any time during this 12-month period.
If you choose to have the value of the Bonds repaid immediately, the Bonds will be eligible for prize draws only for the calendar month in which the repayment takes place.
