I've pulled out from this month given the changes made to the prize funds
You only 'sort of' get your stake money back.
Ignoring winnings in both cases, if you play the lottery twice a week, you lose £104 in a year; if you hold about £3.5k in PBs, you lose about £104 (in real terms) in a year. Winnings aside, these two scenarios are equivalent, which means that with that pattern of play (twice a week) and that level of PB holdings (£3.5k), you can simply compare the chance of winning in each case on a level playing field.
In short, the assertion (which crops up quite often on this forum and others) that you get your money back with PBs is something of a fallacy.0 -

Just because I dont want to look through 155 pages of history on this thread - has an MSE member ever won the big one and posted it on here? Is the largest win recorded here £1000? (as far as I could see).
Just interested to know
Hi
As far as I know the biggest win talked about on this thread was someone's partner who won £100,000. It is on page 15 of this thread if you are interested in reading about it !0 -

Thanks for that I ended up reading 10 pages after that too!
I've just invested my first £100 so I could set up a monthly direct debit. I've decided to put my annual payrises into bonds as savings for my children. I realise the investment may be less than some higher interest savings accounts especially with low holdings but for me its a way of saving for my children without them having access to it until I decide (i've chosen to do it on my own account rather than set up a trustee account). The chance of a bigger return is a bonus!
If i've just bought now will I automatically be in the draw at the end of this month?MFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0 -

First draw you're bond numbers will be entered into will be Octobers prize draw.
If you bought them today you would waste the remainder of this month (August) and still have to hold them for a whole calender month (September) and they will be eligible for October's prize draw.
When I make a purchase I wait till the last day of the month (even if that falls on a Saturday or Sunday) because you have to hold them for a full calender month before they are entered in the draw.
When buying Premium Bonds its best to wait until the end of the month to do so.Never let the perfume of the premium overpower the odour of the risk0 -
Thanks. I get paid on 28th of each month so i'll just purchase them on payday from now on.MFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0

If you continue "winning" £25 a month for the next 6 months, your AER will be 2%. If you don't "win" any more, your AER stands at 1%. Neither of which comes close to inflation. So you actually have lost, not unlike most savers these days.
Of course you can "win" an awful lot more, but the odds are massively against you (and me).0 -

Thanks,of course I already knew this but with such paltry rates available and for my portfolio it`s worth a go.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
