I also suffer from Arthritis and was awarded 1st time round, im 26 i've had my right hip replaced and both knees just waiting to have both elbows replaced first one been done next month. I was awarded it for 2 years but just get DLA as im working. On the forms I put down whats it like when its at its worst I do have a few good days but these are not very often. I think it is best to put down when its at it worst.

My inital claim for DLA was at the lower rate for both components - I appealed and it has been at the higher rate for 5 years now (indefinitely) so don 't give up. I wish you well.

    Re: DLA

The Benefits Agency (if you can call them Benefit ......... Don't get me started!!!) ALWAYS, without fail dismiss your initial claim.

There should be Note on the form that tell you to automatically submit a second claim straight away .............. SO if you have not already done so, SUBMIT a new claim THIS WEEK.

If you have, .............. submit a third ........... fourth, etc ........ as your condition can change every day.

Also when putting distances, remember to add if this is on a GOOD DAY ..... or one of your BAD DAYS???

If you search through Google, you can often find sites, that help you word out your claim and remember when filling in the for, it does not matter if you can walk 100 yards, B4 you need to rest "ON A GOOD DAY" .............. you need to answer each question for your BAD DAYS ..................... so if you can only walk a few feet on a BAD DAY, put this down for your answer.

If your disability is a PERMANENT one, with no hope of it getting better (on it's own) in the near future, do not give up and submit a claim again.

To get a replacement form call the Benefit Enquiry Line (BEL) on 0800 88 22 00 [Text-Phone 0800 24 33 55] ...... plus ask them about any other help you may be entitled to and they should go through a check list and send you the relevant info to get you started.

    Hope this helps?

most initial claims are refused due to lack of or poor information, the best way is to appeal, other than that you must wait i believe 3 months between claims

I've only claimed DLA twice so far. The first time in 2005, and this year as I just renewed my claim. I have been awarded first time around on both claims. In fact, I was awarded a higher rate on my renewal. I put as much info as I could and described how my disability affects me and any new difficulties I have. I filled in all the forms myself (even though a lot of people say to get a specialist to do them). I'm not sure if I was just lucky but I certainly think explaining in detail about my disability helped my claim.

You do not have to wait 3 months between claims, there is no time limit on reclaiming.

healy is correct about there being no waiting period before you can reclaim, but otherwise I agree about the likely causes of claims failing. It is an area that I am planning to look into in more depth in the near future, so I'll let you know my findings (if I can get any information out of the DWP)! x

How often do you have to renew your DLA claim?
